Will you be updating the Mortal Kombat? And I don’t see a Galaga there at all… Just wondering.

Site looks great by the way!

Thanks @SLOTH! Yes, I’m a bit behind in site updates compared to this thread as I do short writeups of every game and have to make various other updates – however you can get the same downloads above in this thread, there’s really nothing different in what’s on the site.

Night Warriors: Darkstalkers Revenge (Capcom - 1995)

This is basically Darkstalkers 2, released one year after the first. It had roughly double the memory capacity from the original game, which allowed much more detailed character animation.

Thoggo – Just a quick note to say how much I love your site. Your write-ups are a big part of the fun. Keep them coming!

Thanks @benlogan, I actually spend a fair amount of time on those (researching, watching videos, playing the games) so I’m glad someone is reading them!

Blasteroids (Atari – 1987)

MAME version

RetroArch version

Blasteroids is another example – like Smash TV, Rampage World Tour and Strike Force – of a later arcade game that updated a popular early 80s formula with improved graphics and more complex gameplay. Blasteroids takes the basic premise and gameplay of Asteroids and adds elements that were in vogue in the late 80s – pre-rendered 3D graphics, powerups, branching level structures and boss fights.

These additions add more depth to the gameplay, but they also make it a fair bit easier to get into early on, as you can take multiple hits and replenish your shield in addition to grabbing more powerful weapons. The game also adds the ability to transform your ship into three different types (focusing on speed, armor or firepower) and allows two players to team up, including the ability to dock your ships together into a more powerful ship. Though you could argue these updates overcomplicate a game concept that has a certain purity and simplicity, Blasteroids has enough polish and a gentle enough difficulty curve that it’s fun even for people who don’t love Asteroids.

The MAME version includes two screen sizes and curved and straight screen options, while the RetroArch version sticks with the large straight screen.

Magic Sword (Capcom - 1990)

Update to this overlay for overall aesthetics and control panel overlay. The art was supplied by @MrDo, as is usually the case for these overlays. The only exception being the CPO stickers which I was able to recreate from a photo.

There are full bezel and large screen views included:

Wow these are looking great! I love the Magic Sword & Blasteroids!

I played Blasteroids a fair bit in the arcade

Ars, do you have Forgotten Worlds on your list? :innocent:

Yes, Forgotten Worlds is on the list, the CPO for that one isn’t available anywhere I can find, which is sort of the hold up on that game. Unfortunately it’s not the sort of design that will be easy to replicate from a photo either. Hopefully I can get a good source for that soon, it’s a great set of art and the game is a classic!

Dragon Blaze (Psikyo - 2000)

This is an update of my old custom design to include a control panel. All the art on this one is custom work as there was no western release for this game. I used a poster from the original game artwork for the marquee and bezel while the CPO is based on art found in the game screens.

Aliens (Konami - 1990)

This is an update to add a control panel version for Aliens. The CPO art is impossible to find but I did dig up an old, low resolution photo of a NOS copy of this that I upscaled and applied some effects to enhance it as well as I could. I think it came out passably well. The stickers are recreated from photos, and reflect what was included with the original game.

Dungeons & Dragons: Shadow over Mystara (Capcom - 1996)

We already have a non-cpo set of overlays available on the web site that @thoggo put together early last year but I wanted to create a set with control panels. I recreated the cpo decal stickers in vector format and was able to find a low resolution shot of the dedicated control panel art Capcom produced for this title (and I think for Tower of Doom as well). I upscaled and cleaned that up and it came out very nice for the overlay.

Thoggo will be merging these into his original set for publication on the site, but I wanted to share these out here for now.

I created a Dynamo cabinet version with the large marquee, as well as a standard cabinet format with the smaller marquee but instruction strips:

Dungeons & Dragons: Tower of Doom

I was able to recreate the yellow instruction cards on the control panel for this one and have posted those to the mameworld forums for anyone who wants them for their own project.

There was a large format marquee released for this game too, but I’ve been unable to track down a copy, so there’s just one version for this overlay with the standard marquee format.

Love the Dungeon’s and Dragons! I was hoping Tower of Doom was next!!!

I was wondering are these guys on your list?

  • Choplifter
  • Arkanoid
  • Tempest

It’s funny I never played Choplifter in the arcade but got it as my first game with the Sega Master system. The funny thing about Choplifter was it started as a Apple II game, but the arcade version looks Sooo much better.

@briball is already working on Tempest, and it’s funny you asked for it as @NeoKarnage just requested that one the other day

Choplifter, all the art is available and I can work on that soon.

Arkanoid also has the art available but would be a bit more work due to the spinner, which I don’t have a model of from @papashine, so would have to come from a photo or I’d have to create something myself.

Yeah just finishing off the button switching and a few tweeks to the marquee and then tempest should be posted soon, also galaxian is on my plate and ready to serve.
