Salamader / LifeForce (Konami 1986)

I loved this game in the arcade and on the ZX spectrum too, never got very far but enjoyed it kicking my arse! Its a classic scrolling shooter by Konami. Released in 1986 as a spin-off of Gradius, Salamander introduced a simplified power-up system, two-player cooperative gameplay and both horizontally and vertically scrolling stages. Loved having this on my cab recently and needed to do a long overdue overlay, based on the Konami Electrocoin Goliath cab presentation and I’ve done a Salamander and Lifeforce variant both with and without the CPO.

These use the usual 3D screen bezel, CPO, nuts bolts, and random cab pieces I created a while back, Bezel is also a custom piece to re-create the glitter effect of the original (I have an Electrocoin generic Unigame overlay I need to share too) and the CPO is built from scratch l, I can’t attribute the source of the Marquee’s as I’ve had them for years on my drive.

Mame version with all 4 multiple views/PNGs is here MAME / PNG download

(Random still of the 3D CPO as I thought the texture looked nice in this one )

Hey @darkand, I dropped these on my 2 vertical cabs today, they look great, my son loves the king of fighters series and I love the NeoGeo, the 3D CPO and 3D monitor bezel on these was a real labour of love for @ArsInvictus and I so these updates are very much appreciated :+1:

I was digging around my old project files and found this which was pretty close to completion, it’s a whole bunch of layered PSDs with buttons and various control sticks including their shadows in multiple locations, all with alphas and some lit textured surfaces for the CPO surface I was sorting for @ArsInvictus, @Briball, @Thoggo and anyone else that might have needed them. Its a few hours from completion but would anyone be interested in me finishing this up and supplying them here? I notice a lot of people have cut out what they need, but this would give accurate reflections and lighting across the whole CPO if needed.

Hell yes! Even though I haven’t been putting these together anymore, having this out there for others to leverage will make people more likely to take on the CPO portion of the overlay and raise the overall quality of anything people contribute for the rest of all time :star_struck:

Yeah! This would be awesome!

If it is not much extra work, what do you think about adding an extra render which is a lighting pass of just the screen and the objects with a white surface color?

Then I could possibly use this to light them from the dynamic game image in the Mega Bezel…

Great to hear from you @HyperspaceMadness, That sounds very cool! very much like some of the things we spoke about when I was last on this, would love to see some dynamic light falling across the control panel controlled by the game.- drop me a message and we can talk about what exactly that might look like, and do some tests.

Moonwalker | SEGA 1990

This was a favorite of mine and my brothers, first played at a local American theme park here in the UK in 1990 and we were blown away by the sound and energy of this 3-player cab. Not seen much overlay love for this so unsure how many of you will want it but wanted to share it anyway!

I built from scratch the CPO art from many poor references (though I’m happy that it’s now 99% accurate) and a 3D CPO, again the assets have been sitting for a while so no idea who to credit with the Bezel or marquee scan!

Here’s a render of the new 3D Control panel close up:

@PapaShine Great to see new overlays. Looks awesome.

I remember playing the game when it first hit the arcades back in 1990. My friend and I pumped in quarters until we finished it only to have some younger kid hit the buttons skipping the ending sequence. :rage:

Thanks @NeoKarnage, much appreciated.

Sounds like you invested hard in this to get that far on your first play!! We didn’t get that far but beat it together years later on my first cab build, been planning a vertical overlay for a few years so pleased to have it ready to play with him again this Christmas :christmas_tree:

Restoration CPO UPDATE: Double Dragon TAITO 1987

this one nearly didn’t appear on here as I know @walter.farmacia has done a great 4k CPO overlay since I did this but I finished this a good while ago in late 2020 and never published it using scan of an old Double dragon CPO that I was cleaning up so this will serve as an alternative if anyone is interested. As I previously owned a DD in the late 90’s I know the CPO artwork REALLY well and I needed that level of authenticity since allmost all of the reproduction CPO’s for this are actually composited of other artwork lacking a lot of detail and use the illustrations of the characters from the marquee, they look similar at first glance but there’s actually a lot of differences to the original (emotion on the faces for one!) also the logo is different and the dragon lacks a lot of detail, especially in the top right.

If you’re interested here is a comparison with the archived repo vs a wip of the original i restored (around 80% complete in this)

So, for any purists out there, here is an alternative overlay using @ArsInvictus lovely DD overlay which also included some basic 3D elements from me, here is my 20 months-delayed 3D CPO update for this iconic 1987 Taito classic! Again, one my brother and I loved as kids and I wanted to get up on my cabs for the holidays last year, we bought it for every system and played as often as we could in the arcades. This overlay really deserved a full presentation as it’s such an icon and really defined this genre.

If you decide to add this one, please enjoy!
