GONDOMANIA

Is a shoot 'em up game developed by Data East and released in 1987.

It is war with the Gondos… Your women are held captive in the Planet of Thorns. Mount your air bike… Prepare for battle!

Awesome Walter. I get my rotator sticks tomorrow and I can’t wait to play using this overlay. :grinning:

I hope to get mine soon too! I’m actually workin on building a reproduction Ikari Warriors in a Dynamo HS-1 format and can hopefully finish it up in the next week or so with those sticks

Here’s a Ghouls N Ghosts I finished up last week in the same cab design:

Looks great. How many repro cabs are you planning to build?

Not sure, I’m planning to sell the air hockey table so I could fit another 7-8 cabinets in the space. It will be a mix of originals and repro’s, I have everything I need to assemble a Star Wars cabinet, including the original control deck and monitor shroud, so this is probably next. Will play it by ear after that.

BTW, my rotary sticks just arrived

Very cool. 7-8 other cabinets or one Star Wars Cockpit arcade cabinet.

Since you have the sticks already are you planning to test them out today?

Nah, not goin with sit down cabinet lol. The plans are out there but I’d prefer to keep the space for the other games

I’m hoping I will have time tonight, but if not then I definitely will tomorrow.

Asterix Marquee

I’m not sure on the history behind the Asterix artwork. I’m assuming there was some art distributed but I haven’t seen any actual Asterix cabinets in images online, so I can’t say. I did find a couple variations of a “marquee” but both appear to be something put together by fans after the fact. One looks based on a flyer and the other appears to be inspired by the instruction card, for which a scan does exist.

I liked the design of the one based on the flyer, but only low resolution copies of that are available, so I upscaled, traced and reproduced it in high resolution. I also added some trademark type text and symbols, as an actual marquee would normally have had that.

If anyone has information or an image about the actual original marquee let me know, otherwise I plan to create an overlay using what I produced:

I’m also thinking to put together a custom bezel and CPO design, as overlay options.

I got it together. I’d forgotten how hard Ikari Warriors is! Very cool to be able to play it properly though.

The cab is coming together too:

Joystick is 80 dollars, which is a pretty good deal considering the options it offers in terms of 8/12/16/free way rotation. The Ultimarc rotary solution wasn’t so flexible and after adding in the price of the octagonal yellow top and base Sanwa joystick actually comes out to more. And this throws in 6 buttons and a built in encoder (which is optional, I’ll probably just use an I-Pac for the buttons in the cabinet.

I’ve only played on it a little bit at this point, but it seems to be pretty responsive with good switches, etc. It’s definitely not as responsive as a Sanwa, which is what I usually use, but definitely good enough for the handful of rotary games out there.

Ikari Warriors is hard. Victory Road is even worse. Emulation without the rotator sticks makes playing them harder than it should be. I’ve been waiting to play Time Soldiers again properly. One of my favorites that I used to be able to finish on one credit.

The cabinet looks great. Will it be a dedicated Ikari Warriors cabinet or multi game? You’ll need a third button for a few of the other games.

Let me know what you think of the stick when you get it too.

I’m planning to have it play at least a few other vertically oriented rotary joystick games, there are really only a handful out there. I haven’t looked into what games would require 3 buttons, but it might be possible to use the extra buttons for each player for the 3rd button, if it’s not something used frequently, each button will be mapped uniquely as I won’t wire them together. I also don’t want to alter the cabinet at all, I’m striving for authenticity.

But most of my nostalgia is around Ikari Warriors, I never really played the others back in the day, though I hear good things about Time Soldiers in particular.

Still waiting… I definitely will let you know.

Here’s a list of rotary games:

Bermuda Triangle

DownTown

Gondomania

Guerrilla War

Heavy Barrel

Ikari Warriors

Ikari Warriors II: Victory Road

Ikari III: The Rescue

Midnight Resistance

T.N.K. III

Search And Rescue

Time Soldiers

Top Gunner aka Jackal bootleg uses the rotary sticks

The only one that requires 3 buttons is Ikari III. So not even an issue.
