"Halfdeck — Today at 7:25 PM

That’s a great idea. I’ll think about posting something like that soon. I’ve also been thinking about posting a list of things and chance of them happening (never, maybe, definitely). For example, I will never add a desktop version because I want everyone to experience this in VR. I will definitely (at some point) like to add save states because some games’ start sequence is really long. I may consider adding multiplayer (but this will be a big lift and will probably require additional help) but again, it’s less important to me than increasing game coverage. This kind of list may lessen repeated discussion of certain features."

Kind of disappointing to read there will never be a desktop version.

So I played with Halfdecks VR Arcade time capsule a few releases back. While you can’t start games while in desktop mode. You can still navigate the room space with a controller or mouse keyboard.

You can still run the whole thing in portrait mode to get the full view of the cabinets as well. This is useful if you want to try and get screenshots for overlay use since these look so lifelike. I did this for one of Halfdeck’s Astro City cabs.

But the texture quality in Unreal Engine has some built in (quality scale) settings that make objects less detailed from certain distances. So art that is in full 4k resolution while looking at it very closely will look muddy from only a couple feet away.

I found the settings in the .ini files which fixes this, but it is at the engine level. I asked Halfdeck if he would consider fixing the variable resolution on the textures. He was receptive to the change and I think it may of been fixed with his latest version. But I have’t had time recently to try it out.

As for realtime reflections. I remember the cabs giving off light from the screen. And there is a nice glass transparency that is very convincing. But the effect of the reflections is rather muted.

@far327 Thanks for sharing your hands on experience and confirming desktop exploration is possible and functional.

Thanks @Duimon . My bad. I’m posting again without it.

R-Type, R-Type II and R-Type Leo.

For MAME 0.261 maybe you should need to find new ROMS because most of the sites have old ones.

Pac-mania : 1987

This one has been sitting on my to-do list for a good while and I actually finished it a few weeks ago but haven’t had time to post, its been missing from the vertical overlays and was always a favorite cab of mine mainly because of the cool 3D marquee - it’s underrated and quite a fun game in its own right if you can look past the close up view of the maze that bothered Pacman fans when it was released! This includes a full 4k restoration of the marquee and a new 3D CPO render as well as a 3D render of the bezel to get the angles of the original spot on - it’s a little untested so have a play with the lay file if you need to - thought it was better out there with you all than languishing on my hard drive

!

Grab it here (mame only, please feel free to edit and re-post for libretro!): pacmania.zip

The “Bezel-0-Matic” at work.

Thanks @PapaShine !!!

I tried to match the CRT curvature with the artwork curvature. Also I stretched it horizontally so the bezel is more even at both axis. Hope you like it.

The overlay looks amazing as usual. Do you have the unlit volcano buttons or tops so the button code can be added to make them functional?

Hey @NeoKarnage - The whole thing is 3D so I can make that work for sure, it was on my list to do it but not had time to implement - will try and get to that next week! Thanks for the positive feedback

Thank you @ArsInvictus :relieved: I wish I was more prolific but very happy to contribute when I can find time  lovely to see you’re back in the saddle with these overlays too

Rampage (both versions), Rampage World Tour, Red Earth and Red Baron (nice looking vector game).

For Red Earth and MAME, better try No-CD rom clones (redearthn or redearthnr1) for faster boot (params included).

hi @ArsInvictus,

there was a time, i know you have made some generics 4K overlay like Snes, Genesis, etc… Do you know if you have done the Sega Saturn and do you have a google drive for this generic overlays ? Tks again

Hi @oneshout, funny I don’t see those out in the directories anymore. I never did a Saturn but I put the overlay png files out here for SNES, NES and Genesis:

Snow Bros 2 - With New Elves custom marquee

Just thought I’d share some progress on my current pet project. I picked up a Konami 4-player cab with no monitor that had been converted over to Soul Edge for a few hundred bucks. I’m planning to freshen the cabinet up, sand, paint, etc. And I’ve ordered a replacement control panel. For the game I thought I would do something unique with this and turn it into a Snow Bros 2 cabinet, since it’s a 4 player game. I love the original Snow Bros and only recently found it had this 4 player sequel. It’s the same basic gameplay, though I think the original is better in some ways in terms of balance and duration, but the sequel is plenty of fun too and has brighter colors and is more fast paced (and too short by at least one world).

Anyway, I’ve started work on what I plan to be a full art set for the game, including control panel, side art, and eventually a bezel. There’s a new version of this planned for the Switch and I used the marketing flyer for that version as the source for this. Here’s the marquee in low resolution:

I’m still working through ideas for the CPO, but obviously when it’s all done I’ll put an overlay together with this too. This project will probably keep me occupied for a while, as things are busy again at work here.
