Improved version of Dynamic Marquee for vertical games, now with plastic mask reflection, thanks to @ArsInvictus. Also aspect ratio fix included.

Two screenshots per game, title screen and game screen. A.D. 2083 and Acrobat Mission have their own marquees. And yes, Acrobat Mission marquee sucks…

They really skimped on some of those late 80s/early 90s artworks (especially shoot em ups). A lot of good games with bare cabinets. I guess they figured the graphics were getting good enough to attract and they didn’t need flashy art.

That one there is just something someone threw together in PS though. If it was an actual marquee there would be some branding. A lot of these games from that time, if they weren’t wide releases, the art is just lost :frowning:

The flyers and instruction cards and sometimes the japanese art is available and that’s what I usually try to use to come up with art for the overlays.

The investment in the artwork and cabinet design definitely degraded over time though. It just became about saving money, reusing cabinets, swapping out art and PCB’s more easily etc. It’s kind of depressing

5 of the 6 are new old stock, they had been in storage for the last 25 years unused. Only 2 of them are powering on right now so I’ll have to get the other 4 fixed, but it was just $600 for the lot of them. Wells Gardner is still around I think but pretty niche compared to the old days

The 2 that did power on are absolutely beautiful though! Bright with vibrant colors and no burn-in. I haven’t seen an arcade CRT monitor that looks this good in a long time.

Actually is just the game logo with a blue background. It seems someone decided to batch process the game logos with PS or something to create a “default” marquees collection.

There is a better marquee over at LaunchBox’s Game Database.

Yeah, I have no idea what that background art is. I’m going to take a stab at one using the flyer artwork later. I found an original online that I ordered and will scan, restore and upscale etc.

Snow Bros 4K Vertical Overlay

I’ve been sitting on this one a long time. The marquee is one I picked up on eBay and scanned and restored. It’s much more complete than the other copies I’ve found online. I’d hoped to track down a good set of control panel stickers for this one but haven’t been able to find any good copies of those yet.

Buta San (Pigs & Bombers) Marquee

I saw a couple people playing this game along with some other obscure MAME titles on Twitch and it looked fun and piqued my interest. The reviews for this actually all are incredibly positive, it’s a simple game, kind of like Bomberman but “on amphetamines and without walls”. So, I started work on an overlay for this and as there is no official art still in existence (other than the Japanese flyer and instruction cards), I put this marquee together from the flyer artwork:

I plan to design some NA style instruction cards and will provide a custom overlay once those are done.

Space Harrier | Upright cab | SEGA 1987

Another Yu Suzuki classic, one of the highest-grossing arcade games, third-person arcade rail shooter Space Harrier was developed at Sega and released in 1985. It was originally conceived as a realistic military-themed game played in the third-person perspective and featuring a player-controlled fighter jet, but technical and memory restrictions resulted in Yu Suzuki redesigning it around a jet-propelled human character in a fantasy setting but the cabinets retained the original flight control stick and dials which sit at odds with the games aesthetic, but are a huge part of the cabs iconic look and feel.

This is another overlay that’s been sitting on my cab for years but I’ve never been satisfied with the look, now after 4 or 5 attempts I’ve finally decided to completely rebuild the whole control panel and screen bezel in 3D (along with some heavy Photoshop work) to get it looking good in the vertical format and finally feel happy to share it! Special, thanks to @ArsInvictus for supplying a beautiful marquee for this too.

@HyperspaceMadness, I know this is one you asked for a couple of times, better late than never! I’ll have another version with an animated start button up at a later date, but for now please enjoy this labor of love.

Space Harrier is definitely one that is perfect for the vertical format. Looks really cool.

edit On a side note… are the plastic side walls for Space Harrier a new scan? I don’t remember the old MAME art version looking that good.

Haha, no, this is completely re-created in 3-D, I couldn’t find any decent hi resolution images of it and wanted full control over the lighting etc so it could get it to work in a vertical format, I’ve adjusted the panels so that they look as good as I can get them within the width restriction as the original cab is quite wide, this means the perspective is optimised!

Also, the control panel is completely rebuilt in 3-D too, I’ve got all the textures and look of the bolts, plastic etc as authentic for both as I can - glad you like it!

Nice work on that. Do you happen to have a high res of just the panel that we could use as a resource for horizontal overlays as well? Also, have you done any of the similar panels like the vector Star Wars, etc?

Strangely enough @ArsInvictus and I where just taking about possibly tackling the Star Wars cab, if ever, there was a machine needed a theatrical dramatic presentation it was that! there’s already a nice one out there but I’d love to have a well lit bespoke 4K overlay done. There’s allot of little elements I’ve created in 3D which you see commonly used in allot of the overlays on here like joysticks, buttons, metal/plastic profile strips, t-moulding, generic monitor bezels, bolts and coin doors etc - happy to send those over, I’ll try and put a folder of bits up for people to harvest as I think mostly they just get cut out of older overlays.

I have an After Burner overlay which is animated too, you’re welcome to use that:

also I have a nice authentic looking 4k render of a plastic monitor bezel used on cabs like Konami (TMNT) dynamo and Neogeo cabs you can use too.

Yeah, I would absolutely love any of these you have made to use in my own horizontal Mega Bezel shader setups. If you can upload just the 3D plastic image that would be amazing. Thanks.

The Star Wars one came to mind because the images we have been using for so long look bad and are mostly black. Some other ones that come to mind are those old games like Destroyer and Starship 1, etc (actually those don’t look too terible, but are low res, I think). These are just suggestions of course. The MAME artwork for some of these 3D plastic backgrounds has always been bad.
