Updated Truxton Overlay

I was able to get an original Truxton marquee from eBay and used a backlight to verify how the marquee looks when illuminated. I cleaned up the marquee itself and then attempted to mimic how it looked lit. The colors shifted to become a bit deeper and saturated, which I’ve replicated here.

I’ve also updated to include new speaker models and @papashine’s coin door:

That Truxton Marquee looked great before, looks awesome now - really nice balance with the colors like that - I’ve had it running on one of my cabs in my studio most of the day and can’t wait to have a propper play when i’m done.

Updated Double Dragon overlay

@Dreamstate turned me on to this Dragon’s Lair arcade forum I’d never seen before. I found an old scan and restore there done by Etienne. The colors had faded and had shifted blue, so I made an attempt to make the colors more as they might have been originally. I couldn’t find any clean copies of the bezel to use as a reference that hadn’t faded either. Overall though, this is much more legit than the bezel I was using before for this overlay.

I also updated the coin door with @Papashine’s.

Here’s the updated overlay:

Renegade 4K Vertical Overlay

This game didn’t have a dedicated cabinet, it was a conversion kit only. So I just threw in a @Papashine Taito coin door to match the brand and chose a really cool speaker design he created for the Sea Scare overlay (coming soon).

Thanks to @MrDo for providing the bezel and marquee scans. I restored the marquee myself in this case.

Man, now that is a classic, that was the first game i bought from the arcade on Spectrum 48k, showing the screenshots on the back from the different versions and when I saw this in the local arcade i couldn’t believe how much better it looked! never got past the first level though, time to change that!

I know I played this one, but I don’t think I played it at the arcade much. I think I had it on the Amiga actually. I have to give this one some attention too

Yeah, they say your reflexes slow down, but I am WAY better at Galaga now than I was when I was 12! I couldn’t afford to sink so many coins into it lol.

Sea Scare (aka Tomahawk 777) 4K overlay

This one is another big team effort. @Dreamstate located and restored the marquee and bezel. I recreated the front panel behind the coin door and did the marquee lighting effects, as well as assembled the overlay. @PapaShine recreated the Zaccaria coin door as a 3D render, recreated the speaker based on photos of the original cab, as well as did the 3D effects and metallic border frame for the marquee.

I think the whole thing came together amazingly well  Thanks again @Dreamstate and @PapaShine for your talent and contributions!

Zero Team USA

I threw this one together pretty quick for @PapaShine, as it is a favorite game of his brother’s. I might revisit the bezel in the future, this one is something simple I based on the arcade flyer for the game. I also used @Papashine’s new Midway coin door.

This looks amazing, well done! Such a great result and looks stunning running on my vcabs this morning - I have this running on one and Vanguard running on the other :star_struck: they make a handsome pair.

I really feel like this preserves the unique cabinet design perfectly, and that new elevated coin door angle, while subtle, really works so thanks for your feedback and input on that! I wasn’t sure if the new hand painted lit coin slot would look OTT but really happy it worked out.

Also massive thanks @ArsInvictus for delivering that zero team USA overlay, completely unexpected!! I woke up to seeing the marquee scan, but now there is a full overlay already to go!! and the new bezel looks seamless, really great work, my brother is going to flip his lid!!

Hey @PapaShine, glad I could help you and your brother out with the Zero Team marquee and overlay! Let me know how he likes it

I agree, these 2 Zaccaria cabs are really a special set. @Dreamstate is working on restoring more, and a Zaxxon is next, so I’m looking forward to adding to the collection! Beautiful cab designs and artwork.

That elevated camera looks perfect. These overlays are really looking slick. Can’t wait to see them on my pincab.

Yeah I gotta say that lights out version is pretty damn cool. Based just on those coin slots alone lol. Awesome!

R-Type updated overlay

I’m not sure how many iterations I’m up to on this overlay now. But this game is a personal favorite so I’m always looking to improve it.

This version features some really beautiful custom cabinet frame graphics for the marquee borders that beautifully recreate the original cabinet design by @PapaShine. As well as his recreation of the original coin door from this cabinet.

Beyond that I’ve also included a much better copy of the marquee and applied my latest lighting effects to match the original cabinet marquee lighting effect as well as I could. I’ve also dimmed the overall lighting to make the marquee and screen “pop” a bit more. This was also a very dark cabinet design originally, so I’ve tried to match that feeling with the tones here.

As before, the bezel art is a recomp from the original cabinet side art.

I do exactly the same - often, once I’ve finished something I’ll just stand there and marvel at the smallest, ‘insignificant’ details - that’s what the magic is in this kind of work, and in VFX, the very tiny elements that when working right deliver the illusion your trying to sell, and not everyone will see it, or notice it but without it, it doesn’t work - I spend most of my days creating things that aren’t real and selling an illusion in my work, this ain’t far from it and it’s great to see that attention focused on something that I love and care about like this.

Great job on the update to this @ArsInvictus, really beautiful overlay and once again, a great homage to the game.

This is so cool! I didn’t know you were working on this! Can these effects be done in Retroarch? I know they can in MAME, vanilla, but didn’t think the Retroarch overlay model supports it?

With each release is there always a large screen version??

Hi @BlockABoots, no, not always, I’ve been less consistent lately with the larger screen versions. I usually only do those for horizontal games as vertical games tend to already have sufficient real estate. For the horizontal games I’ve done it in some cases but not consistently. It is something I’d like to do eventually, to go back over the portfolio and create one for every horizontal game.

This is something @benlogan helped out with for a couple games and I just realized I never published them out to my drive. So I’ll add those too.
