Beetle PSX and Fan-translated/Patched BINs

Hey Everyone,

I’m just putting together my launchbox and retroarch setup, and so far I think I’m set, but I’m having one last set of issues.

With a few Japanese games almost any fantranslated PSX games I try to launch crash or freeze hopelessly. For example: If I take a bin/cue of Brigandine: Grand Edition that’s got 0 errors in CD mage, it loads. If I either try a pre-patched rom or apply patches myself (sucessfully), they always seem to crash in RA. They do load in ePSXe however.

I’ve also tried Tales of Phantasia. Tranlated bin (loaded via cue) hangs on a black screen in RA, loads fine in ePSXe.

Usually the crash includes a runtime error popup in windows or just a black screen.

Are the hacks involved with translated discs breaking comparability with RA? Is it possibly a bios issue? I’ve been trying multiple version of games, converting, etc, but not having much luck. I’d prefer to use RA over epsxe so any tips or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Can you get a log of one of the crashes? That will give us a better idea of what’s actually happening.

I had this issue some time ago and a nice guy (can’t remember the name) told me to fix the ECC of the patched game, using ECC Regen, you can easily find this tool searching on Google, then, when you fix it, it should work fine in RA.

And just in case fixing the ECC doesn’t work, there was a fixed version of the ToP patch Cless uploaded but didn’t link on his site that works with Mednafen: http://www.tales-cless.org/patches/ToP%20test%20fix.7z

Thanks everyone, it seems like ECC regen did the trick for Brigandine, and the patch from Awakened worked on the first go.

The help’s much appreciated.

Thanks everyone. The ECC issued fixed brigandine and the ToP patch from Awakened worked on the first go.

The help’s much appreciated!

Brigandine - Grand Edition? This was the very same game that I needed to fix te ECC, nice TRPG BTW.

Yep that’s the one. I’ve heard it’s pretty solid. I was more on the N64 side of things so I mostly hit the SNES franchises of PSX rpgs (Breath of Fire, Final Fantasy, Chrono Cross ,etc) but have been steadily trying out some of the JRPGs I missed on PSX.

A few exceptions, I had picked up Valkyrie profile and star ocean II as soon as they came out. VP was probably my favorite PSX game overall.
