Bezels for vertical games with 4:3 (horizontal) screens

Greetings!

Some of you might know svera’s great work from https://github.com/svera/vertical-bezels-4-3 . He created / curated lots of bezels / overlays for vertical games for those of us using a 4:3 horizontal monitor (especially 1600:1200, which still is my holy grail).

In his spirit I have created some bezels myself, which I wanted to share here. The sources for my artwork are mainly https://www.mameworld.info, https://www.arcadeartwork.org/, https://mrdo.mameworld.info/mame_artwork.php and some more which I forgot.

I tried to be as near to original bezels as possible. Exception is Batsugun, which didn’t have one but I liked the idea of creating something more colorful.

Please enjoy!

Punch-Out:

Spy Hunter (kinda mixed bag, because it has no room for the “lights” of the MAME overlays):

Super Pac-Man:

Tempest (using the original cocktail artwork style):

Truxton (there was one already but this one has slightly better readable instruction cards):

Truxton II:

Xevious (just a minor modification of svera’s, adding a instruction card found on a 16:9 Bezel):

More to follow!

Looks good… nice to see a little different style.

Well, I know that it’s kind of “in” to but the image of an actual Arcade Cabinet into the Bezel, as well as it’s surrounding.

But I myself have built a Bartop Arcade machine myself, using a 4:3 Monitor (well 5:4 Monitor actually). There’s no sense in include an arcade machine in the bezel of an arcade machine.

As stated above, I like realistic Bezels. Meaning ones you could use in an actual arcade cabinet with a cabinet-filling 4:3 monitor. They look great when setting opacity to 0.8 .

This is the reason the next ones are kinda “bland”. Most of the following games were presented in Asian “Candy Cabs”, which do not have our beloved Bezel artwork but just a black border, showing instruction cards (like stickers).

So here are my next ones:

Raiden (yes, that’s the bezel found on this one – if it’s not even completely black):

Raiden (custom one, has no instruction cards on the sides of the monitor but I “created” some using the original control panel again)

Donpachi (using the original instruction cards):

Dodonpachi (using the original instruction cards):

Dodonpachi 2 – Bee Storm (has no instruction cards on the sides of the monitor but I “created” some using the original control panel):

And finally just the blankness itself. I’ve decided to use a dark anthracite instead of black, as this would be the real color seen on those cabinets:

Perhaps someone enjoys these as well.

And here my final artwork for today:

Pinball Action (Tekhan used a generic bezel):

Pinball Action (custom version with the original instruction cards as “stickers”):

The Deep (custom, but using the original flyer artwork and instruction cards, lots of work here):

And finally Grand Cross (Pinball), using only the original instrustion card (I know, boring):

Sorry, I was lying.

Here’s Super Cobra. This was a lot of work, since my start was the picture from https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/19896/arcade-overlays-4-3-1600x1200/103, which was based on a photo from https://mrdo.mameworld.info/artwork_wip.php.

I somewhat repaired the scratches in that image an used other photos of the original Bezel to “retouch” the colours. Meaning: I replaced them as good as I could.

Here are the next two.

The first is the Bezel UNIVERSAL seems to have used in all of their games in the '80s:

Jumping Jack was one of those games. I liked the work for Mr. Do! found on svera’s collection, so I took the original CPO and created instruction cards for the game (which was quite a challenge).

Having a little fun with this one. Totally custom, based on the Bezel of the game “Victory”. I like it’s color scheme and adjusted it to the title screen of…

Fast Lane (custom!):

Another obscure classic, totally custom again (it’s the Bezel of “Turbo”).
