DOSBox Core issue - Menzoberranzan not saving/loading

Hi all, I’ve been trying to set up Retroarch’s DOSBox core for my collection of old DOS games and most of them work fine, but I’ve found that in Menzoberranzan (and I’m sure the two Ravenloft games, though I haven’t tested them yet) that while the game loads fine and you can create new characters and even play through it, it won’t save or load any saved games, so there’s no way to record your progress and come back later like you normally could in standard DOSBox. I’m on Windows 8.1 and would really like to get this solved if I can. I noticed that Menzo’s saved games are stored as collections of .DAT files if that makes any difference. Can the DOSBox core not read those for some reason? I want to get this working because I made an overlay to use for the DOS games that simulates the sides of an old CRT computer monitor (such as from a PS/1 system) so that I could play the games in the proper 4:3 aspect ratio without having blank black pillarboxes on either side but rather something more decorative. If standalone DOSBox was able to let you use such overlays, I’d use that instead, but as far as I know, it doesn’t. Here’s the overlay if you’re interested, btw. And thanks for any help you guys can give, I really appreciate it.

I think this has something to do with file/folder permissions. I’m having the same problem with Skyroads. I can see it doesn’t create the save file. And if one is present, it reads it but doesn’t write to it. I’m trying to figure it out too.
