Duimon - HSM Mega Bezel Graphics and Presets - Feedback and Updates

No, I am a bit behind on getting stuff in GitHub. The graphic is only half the battle, I also have to do overlay versions. (Which is really just running them through a template.)

I will get these last few up ASAP and post when I am done.

A note to everyone!

Big changes are coming!

Very soon I will update all my presets. It is my plan to do two sets of presets to replace them, based on the new shader and RA releases.

I have already re-structured My HSM graphics source repo to make future updates easier on me. (Each system is in it’s own folder now so it is much easier to find needed assets.)

If anyone wants to archive the current versions, I will be committing my most recent graphics, along with presets compatible with the current set, tonight and tomorrow.

It will take me quite a few days to complete the work of creating new presets, so there is plenty of time. I will give 24 hours notice when I am ready to commit the new pesets to the repo.

I wanted to sew up my unfinished projects before I dive into the presets.

The Neo Geo Pocket Color!

Turns out there are quite a few distinct differences between it and the NGP. Most notably, the translucent buttons.

At first I was planning to skip them, but the more I worked on this, the more I felt It deserved at least an attempt. (Translucency is really hard. :grimacing:)

In the end I think there is enough to fool the eye. (A lot of the time, creating these graphics is much like acting or writing and suspension of disbelief.)

Along the way, I made some improvements that I carried back to the NGP, so I am happy.

When the new shader is released I will have two sets of presets. The first will take advantage of advanced features and the second will be fairly static, much like an overlay.

With the advanced set, one of the features that most of my new handheld presets will share, is the ability to scale the screen and have the console scale with it. They may also have independent backgrounds that the user can swap out manually if they desire.

hey my friend good job! so if i understant your actual preset don’twork with the new retroarch?

Yeah, I don’t think they work with the new version of RA.

Since the ‘hsm__MEGABEZEL__0__GUEST-DrVENOM’ is the most demanding shader from ‘HSM Reflection Shaders’ some 3d render based cores gets issue with it while ‘hsm__MEGABEZEL__3__SIMPLE__GUEST-DrVENOM’ works almost with every core. At least this was the test result from my end.

I’d say you can go with it for less demanding simple preset set. There is already overlay versions of your graphics which can be used as most static purpose

My plan is to use the “Basic Border” preset for the simple one actually, although I have yet to put it into practice. It’s not compatibility that is my main concern, (@HyperspaceMadness can work that out in the long run.) it’s performance.

Yeah, they aren’t going anywhere, but I make them for Android and Pi devices mainly.

I’m hoping to develop the second set of presets as a replacement for the Hybrid graphics that is easier to set up, we’ll see. It’s going to be a lot of fun to figure out. The Simple preset RA feature will give @HyperspaceMadness and I a lot of freedom to make changes going forward.

These presets will change significantly for the next version which should be released this weekend. There are a few different presets:

  • ADVANCED
    • Includes extra image layers which can be reordered and scaled
  • STANDARD
    • Standard Mega Bezel features
  • GLASS
    • Fills screen with glass like reflection image, same performance as STANDARD preset
  • BASIC-BORDER
    • Has only the Background Layer and no autogenerated bezel and no reflections, can be a replacement for standard retroarch overlay, can also do an effect like the backdrop in mame

I think the STANDARD presets should have less resource usage than the currently released one. I’ll be really interested to see what kind of performance people are getting once they start using it.

Yeah the Basic-Border (in the new version coming) takes about twice the processing power as guest-venom in the standard retroarch shaders, it also doesn’t have reflection ;).

Yeah I’m looking forward to this!

Then it probably won’t replace the Hybrid set then. Maybe I’ll do three. As you say, I am looking forward to this.

BTW.

I have updated the Game Gear to use a 4x3 aspect. Normally the change could simply be made in the shader but the real Game Gear has a hole cut in the bezel that the screen shows through, (Actually just a region that isn’t painted.) so I had to edit the graphic.

It will be included when I commit to the repo. I think I am ready to start working on the final steps.

Alrighty then. The Neo Geo AES, NGP, NGPC, the new IBM stuff, and the modified Game Gear are all in the repo, along with presets, overlays, and Hybrids. (Where it made sense.)

For those of you that like to archive for the sake of archiving, (Like me.) now is the time. I will not be doing any new graphics until after I update all the presets, and that won’t be complete until well after the new shader release. There is plenty of time. :upside_down_face:

Remember, there is nothing magical about my presets. If you can’t wait and want to use my graphics with the new RA then by all means create your own presets.

Just a quick heads up, NGP and NGPC graphics are missing in Logo folder for use of preset.

I mean from here https://github.com/Duimon/HSM-Reflection-Shader-Graphics/tree/master/Logo

Btw, Game Gear looks even better now!

Oops!

They are there now. Thanks.

new retroarch don’t reconize your presets must i wait your new stuff?

Yes, or use an older version of RA until then. As I said above, it is relatively easy to save a core preset and add the graphic in at the end of the *.slangp. I would do as it says in my guide on GitHub, make some small change and save a full preset. This will give you the example image paths to add at the end of a simple preset.

I will have a guide up on my GitHub shortly that reflects changes in the 1.9.1 RA release. I’m sure @HyperspaceMadness will make some changes to his after the new shader is out.

With the new features in RA, image paths will be MUCH easier to add and edit, and as long as the *.slangp are kept somewhere under the RA root path, in any folder, they will still work. (The paths are now relative to the RA root, not the parent shader.)

Converting my presets would also be fairly simple but makes no sense because the new shader release is imminent.

I built several of the presets following the new style. After I update retroarch, I’ll need to change them to point to the ADVANCED preset and see if they still work. I can send them over or as pull requests to your repo, if you want something to start with.

I appreciate the offer but I have plans that involve nested presets and advanced features.

I will be doing things a bit differently this time around since it is likely that this next set of presets will be more or less final.

The badge on the monitors for the IBM 5151 and 5153 have an unfortunate (though funny) typo

 Maybe I should leave it alone!! (Pretend I did it on purpose.)

I will fix it promptly. Thanks for the heads up.

OK. Everything is fixed.

@drstupid Very nice contribution with your first post. Welcome!

I actually originally came here to tell you that there wasn’t an Intellivision preset, but I saw the new IBM monitors, and then the typo, and forgot!

But also I want to say, your work is inspirational. You strive for such high quality, give it all away for free, even not requesting attribution, and you’re polite to a fault to everyone in the thread. I always look forward to your updates and new graphics. I show the new graphics off to my wife each time and she humors me and says “oh, that looks nice,” so, I got that going for me
