FUSE core not adding pull requests?

Hi, is there any reason why pull requests are not being merged to the FUSE core ? There are 8 waiting now (couple are dupes) and one of them has been there since Dec 2024 ? If someone could merge all of dotkovals and rtomasas that would greatly be appreciated.

Anything ? It would be good if you could explain why the pull requests aren’t getting merged. Just complete silence. Is this core considered dead ?

Hey, sorry, nobody is actively maintaining that core, and I didn’t get any notification for the PRs. Now that I’ve seen them, I’ll see about getting some other eyes on them and hopefully get some/all of them merged in the near future.

Thanks for replying. When merging, I think 'metallic77's is a dupe of 'rtomasa's and not sure about the netplay ones. So all of 'dotkoval's and 'tomasa's.

@hunterk Any progress on this ?

I notified a guy with merge rights, but he’s been busy doing other stuff, sorry. I’ll poke him again.

After updated cores on Android just now, loaded a ZX spectrum game, Retroarch crashed and burned. It seem like updating fuse, it stopped for a while there.

First suspect would be they used a pixel format other than what core expects so it hangs immediately.

Windows sinked too, just now updated cores. I don’t know if it’s a recent fix not incorporated yet.

ah, yeah, looks like that build is still from ~20 hrs ago. Let’s give it some time to build the latest updates.

Thanks for testing.

Seems there is a massive array of commits one after another now in fuse repository, probably pushed by Claude Code taking over the repository (?). Nothing bad with it but if it is so, Claude can go rogue mode altering things it shouldn’t (not given clear instructions just do “this”, don’t alter “this”), rendering the code useless after a certain point. Then end up endlessly hunting new bugs it introduced just to go back to a certain point it simply “worked”.

Yeah, we’ve been using LLMs to add VFS support, but also doing some audits of other aspects, and apparently this core had some questionable design choices, so libretroadmin worked on those at the same time.

Making a bunch of commits that touch a bunch of stuff is not my favorite way to deal with stuff, but once we get the initial pain out of the way, it should be in a better state.

Well yes, i used Claude Code on paid pro account to make an editor for an old retro console game that source was available (change levels etc) and while it was going really good, suddenly perhaps from some unclear instruction, went rogue and destroyed everything, didn’t have a backup so abandoned it lol. But it’s really capable on coding PC code. Very impressive stuff

AI is wonderful and useful because it helps you, but a contradiction arises when it comes to shaders. I am always right; I also believe you create many shaders using Claude Code on the paid Pro plan—is my assumption correct?

I cleaned up the squabblin’. Hopefully water under the bridge.

I haven’t found AI to be very useful for shader coding. It can help with algorithms at times, and for conceptualizing, but in my experience, the actual code tends to be naive and often has ugly results.

I respect your perspective, especially since you’re sharing your experience without trying to dictate things to others. I’m not looking for any arguments; I believe in leaving space for everyone, as we all see the world in our own way. And everyone has the right, when they find something useful, to praise it and share their experience. The reason for my reply was to prove that criticism and pointing out mistakes to catch them is easy, but constructive dialogue is what ultimately yields results and benefits the community, whether through a shader or code. Criticism is not difficult, rather it is easy.

It’s all working on Android and Windows now, feel free to lock this thread as completed. Nothing else to say here.

Meanwhile the screen mode output by core is not a proper ZX spectrum 360 x 288 but 320 x 288. So i was right when i looked in his PR, he only changed vertical 240 to 288. So expect new Issues reports that horizontal resolution is not the proper one. True ZX spectrum has around 48 pixels border left, and 48 pixels right… 256 + 48 + 48 = 352 at least. He is also creating a wrong pixel aspect ratio. I don’t understand why that PR was accepted without first discuss the issue and clarify things (this is not an attempt to start a new flame war). In any case i (think i) still have the PROPER fix on Linux, that was rejected.

Discuss here

https://retrocomputing.stackexchange.com/questions/25107/what-is-the-size-of-the-border-of-the-zx-spectrum-in-scanlines-pixels-bytes

https://worldofspectrum.org/faq/reference/48kreference.htm

If it still needs something, and you still have it handy, sure, send it over and we’ll get it merged. Sorry for the hassle.

I think he"s only talking about the overscan area which no games/demos use because it was out of view on a CRT back in the day. It’s the same on Spectaculator. The main screen is 256x192 correct aspect and the rest is border area. I’ve tested some games/demos that use the border area and they work/look fine and in sync. Try the second part of the MDA demo for example, it has a scrolling message in the border area. I"m not sure what"s trying to be achieved here ?

Even though i already posted links to proper ZX Spectrum mode, here is proof, resized the real CRT image so that playable area is 256 x 192, A real ZX Spectrum will output ~360 x 288 and visible around 340 x 260 (marked on image) so you lose around 20 pixels both horizontal and vertical (~10 pixels not visible in each border)

360 : 288 = 1.25

340 : 260 = 1.31 aspect close to a CRT

faulty/inaccurate PR merged:

320 : 288 = 1.11 = stretched graphics on CRT not faithful to the original. A CRT will always be 4 : 3 = 1.333
