Game Specific Overlays

I want to start some talk on the idea of game specific overlays.

I have recently been playing Earthbound, and the button layout for earthbound has always kinda bothered me… If you’ve played it, I’m sure you know what I’m talking about. Its not too bad on a controller because because you don’t have to let go of the d-pad to press the L-button as the “check/talk” button, but on the overlay its a pain (I know, first world problems “aww, poor me, I have to move my thumb off of the D-pad, it it takes soooo long, waah waah.”)

Long story short, I got thinking about making a game specific overlay that only has the d-pad and three buttons, maybe labeled “check” “cancel” and “menu”. And then I got thinking about one handed overlay, that is, putting the d-pad in the corner and the 3 active buttons positioned around it in easy reach.

I am gonna try to make this happen, but I could probably use some help.

I want people to start talking about other games that might benefit from game specific overlays, maybe changing the layout, eliminating useless buttons, etc.
