Hidden Gems to Play

Both games look amazing (especially with this Shader ;-), I need to get into your Shaders again, so much has changed…). Tonight I’ll tryout the fighting game, but no time for RPGs at the moment.

Yeah the first game is more easy to get into, plays just like a snes side stroller just with 32 bit graphics, fun game to blast through even with the language barrier. I also don’t really have time for rgps these days myself but the look of that game pulled me in so I had to try it for a few minutes.

Oh yeah a lot has changed especially since you wrote that article a while back. guest.r’s latest update got my composite presets looking CRISP. Definitely check out my latest pack when you get a chance.

I relate a bit. It’s been more than a decade for me that I’ve ran out of gas for longer games (like RPGs). In fact, this happens to whatever game that doesn’t go straight to the point. Just as a random example, I can’t play Resident Evil anymore: walk a little > open door > wait > walk a little more > another door > more waiting > shoot a bit > open menu > close menu > door again > go back to item chest > menus, doors and waiting… This happens with any game which pacing I feel it’s sluggish.

Ironically, I can spend hundreds of hours with shorter games, like older stuff that can be beaten quickly or have better pacing. I keep replaying those games again and again, to the point I rack up an impressive number of hours with them.

Back with some more randomness. Just came across this one last night for the Famicom called Pizza Pop. Fun little platformer about getting through obstacles just to deliver a pizza at the end of each stage:

An action platformer for Sega Saturn called Willy Wombat. You can rotate the camera 360 to see the level and player from different angles while throwing a boomerang weapon at enemies:

This game called Speed Power Gunbike for the PS1 I wouldn’t know how to categorize it, It’s like a cross up between a racer and a 3D mecha fighter. The first stage had me traveling on a motorbike avoiding obstacles and dodging missles by pursuing enemies while also knocking them off the road all at high speeds just to fight a big screen sized boss at the end, cool looking game:

Platformer for the Sharp X68000 which also has a updated looking version for pc:

Saw this randomly on a YouTube video and thought it looked cool called Monster Tale. It’s like a Mega Man metroidvania for the DS:

That Buster game is 30fps on X68000, what a shame.

Here’s some gameplay from the updated pc version:

This game is in the making for Mega Drive but I’m definitely looking forward to playing this one. The dev plans to add in Road Rash like gameplay into the mix:

Was on a Sega CD binge the other day discovering games I never knew existed. First game is a sequel and final chapter to both El Viento and Earnest Evans called Anett Futatabi, plays like a mix between SOR and Golden Axe:

This one is a shooting action platformer called Devastator based on a animation called “D-1 Devastator” that I never heard of before:

I enjoyed both of these games more than I thought I would, actually completed the second one on the first playthrough cause I couldn’t put the controller down for some reason. Both have cool cutscenes and nice soundtracks.

Edit:

Also this game seemed cool, a Street Fighter clone with RPG elements called Battle Fantasy or Revengers of Vengeance:

This game has a lot of dithering going on in the background stages, check out that purple sky with the clouds, it’s a checkerboard dithering sea back there. Perfect to put my composite presets to work.

You’ve got Bari-Arm also on Sega CD, one of the few good games on that device.

Another one for Sega CD: I’m a fan of Dune (Amiga) and was totally baffled when I found out that there was a version for the Sega CD with voice actors and a crisp CD sound track.

It is by far the best version, way better then the Amiga and PC.

Definitely can’t forget that one. Another shoot em up for Sega CD I enjoyed and actually completed last night was Robo Aleste:

I was trying to see what else Sega CD had to offer besides Sonic CD and Snatcher.

Sega CD actually had some really good games or versions. The system is way more capable of than just CD music or FMV, but was almost never utilized to its fullest. Some people prefer the Sega CD versions of both Lunar games over the remakes on PSX.

But the ultimate power is when you combine Sega CD + 32X. My first game for this combo was Corpse Killer and the last game.

The Terminator is also worth mentioning, especially the soundtrack (it is a new and original music, maybe off putting for some). However gameplay is mediocre to me.

Looking back on it Sega was going crazy in the mid 90’s. As much of a Sega junky I am I have never completed this system combo:

All those add ons and then the Saturn was right around the corner. I personally just went from the Genesis straight to the Saturn at the time so I missed out on a lot of stuff in that in between time. Been catching up more lately though.

While the CD had its charme and reason to exist, long before next generation, nobody knows what Sega was thinking when they released the 32X. Star Wars Arcade and Virtua Racing Deluxe felt like next generation, if only all games were like that. But with the ultimate combo there, the worst was all the cables and power supplies. I think there was two power supplies with this setup, what a mess:

Man. I think that’s the first time I’ve actually seen the back side of that whole thing configured up. I can’t even imagine the web of cables it would’ve looked like had I owned all of this, not to mention I had my snes next to the Genesis at the time with its own set of cables.

Was playing a bit of this unknown game earlier for PS2 called ChainDive:

Gameplay mostly takes place in the air. You’re like a cybernetic Spider Man cyborg with a weapon. Cool music too.

Also played this game for a bit as well, was pretty cool. SkyGunner for PS2:

If I’m not tweaking the guest.r shader then my next favorite thing to do is play obscure games/imports or games that got swept under the radar due to more popular games of the time so this thread is pretty much a good place for me to share my findings lol.
