Mame2003 (linux) - mame config not saving

hi! so this is odd - it looks like this core triggers the internal mame menu with the tab key, or retropad R2. if i make changes to the input (general) or input (this game), i think they should save as a .cfg file in the mame directory, but they don’t!

i think my mame directory is /opt/retropie/libretrocores/lr-mame2003, and i’ve given this directory 777 permissions, but no difference. is it another directory? does anyone have an example file I could put in the directory to manually edit? (if it doesn’t write, it might still read!)

I have this problem on windows as well. I had an older core (Not sure what version) and I could save a general config in the actual roms directory. I was able to do un assign those controls and the config would be saved there. The newer cores don’t seem to save the config there.
