[Mesen-S] Star Fox 2 doesn't create save file

Hi there !

I just tried to play Star Fox 2 (Snes Mini final version) with Mesen-S: the game works great, everything is fine…

Except it doesn’t save at all.

Unlike the original game, Star Fox 2 saves your progress and hi-score on the cartridge, meaning, a .srm file should be created for the game to register your progress.

Yet, this is apparently not working for this title with Mesen-S.

This is the first time I’ve encountered this kind of bug, and it has been mentioned previously by someone from Retroachievements on the game’s wall, so it’s not only on my side apparently.

Any idea or reason why ?

Thank you !

(Playing on Retroarch latest, Windows x64)

yeah, this is actually a problem with the core. it doesn’t make saves for any superFX games.

Thank you for the explanation hunterk, glad to see the Libretro forums are still very active to help and bring answers !

I wasn’t aware about this issue, strange and uncommon. I guess I’ll need to switch to another core for this game and Yoshi’s Island at some point then !

Tested and I get the same behavior. I tried creating a save with Snes9x and then to save afterward with Mesen-S but no luck either. The Mesen-S core doesn’t seem to have any trouble reading a Star Fox 2 save created with another core -it just cannot create or update one.

From what I played there doesn’t seem to be much differences between Mesen-S and Snes9x when it comes to Star Fox 2. Overall, both had pretty low fps -maxing at maybe 20fps with an average of I’d say 12, at best so, pretty close to hardware. There might have been a few places/scenes where Snes9x is a bit faster than Mesen-S, suggesting that maybe Mesen-S might be a tad more accurate in terms of SFX emulation timing.
