MSX Saving & Controls? Controls = Solved

I’ve been trying to setup MSX via BlueMSX. I can get the games to load, but I don’t understand how the controls are supposed to work. This core does a good job of explaining the ColecoVision controls, but it doesn’t say much about the MSX stuff.

I’m admittedly not familiar with this system, so I don’t know what inputs it expects for games off the keyboard that I can map to my controller. The only one I’ve found thus far is ‘spacebar’.

I wondered if this was easier in fMSX, but I can only get to the MSX BIOS - my games won’t run for some reason.

I did some creative google searching and found a translated walkthrough for Metal Gear - the Controls for MSX via BlueMSX are indeed weird.

  • Up, Down, Left, Right = Retropad D-Pad
  • Button A/Spacebar = Retropad A
  • Button B = Retropad B

Pretty straightforward there, but it also uses function keys

  • F1 = Pause
  • F2 = Context
  • F3 = Context
  • F4 = Context
  • F5 = Context

In the case of Metal Gear, it was Weapon screen, Inventory screen, Walk-Talkie, and (while paused) f5 was save, and the walkie talkie became load.

Hopefully this helps anyone…

the REAL problem though is that this core doesn’t seem to let you save. Either the in-system saves or save-states… so it’s kind of unplayable…
