Mupen64 - Fullscreen Slowdown

Hey Guys,

Apologies if this has been asked before. I searched but didn’t find any definitive results.

Long time user, first time writer. You know the drill. Naturally, using RetroArch because of the cohesion of the overall UI and whatnot. An absolute godsend.

Never the less, got Mayflash adapters and an N64 controller fired up and have been enjoying some N64 classics. Between using Mupen64Plus and Parallel there isn’t much that won’t work. However, Mupen64Plus seems to suffer debilitating slowdown when in full screen and this isn’t affected by RetroArch being run in Exclusive Fullscreen or not.

Switching to a window, via hotkey ‘F’ and everything runs buttery smooth. Even if said window is scaled to take up the entire screen. I’d prefer not to play this way as full screen immersion is the way to fly!

Is there a setting or something I am not privy to that is the cause of crippling slowdown when in fullscreen? And remember this seems to exclusively affect Mupen64Plus - which I adore for the 16:9 Enhanced feature. I am running things with the internal resolution upscaled.

The hardware / OS running is Windows 7 Professional x64, Core i7 3770, 8GB Corsair DDR3 1600MHz, and a GeForce 750Ti. The hardware shouldn’t be any kind of issue. But just in case.

Also as a side note, I do skinning for Kodi. Was wondering if RetroArch allows any kind of custom skinning / functionality? Would love to be able to create new looks for it.

When it’s fullscreen and running slow, if you hit the spacebar, does it speed up any?

As for skinning, you can do dynamic wallpapers for playlists and icons, but that’s pretty much the extent of it currently.

Thanks for the prompt reply, HunterK.

Done the spacebar thing, but all that does is kick things into double time. This issue doesn’t seem to affect any other cores. Sometimes after being in fullscreen is will suddenly resume to normal speed but it won’t be long before the thing again decides to chug. But as said, if switched to windowed mode, the issue doesn’t happen and everything runs buttery only in fullscreen and exclusive fullscreen.

Probably not a good basis for comparison, but I don’t have these issues with Project64 but like most, I much prefer the cohesion with the RetroArch UI.

Shame about the skinning options. I enjoy making skins and particularly gaming views for Kodi, would have been cool to bring some of that across direct to RetroArch.

Turn off Hard GPU Sync.
