@sonkun - it looks like your shaders have been incorporated into ShaderGlass v1.2.0
I was very excited to see your shaders included but it looks slightly different in ShaderGlass than what I’m used to seeing in RetroArch.
I’m still going to use RetroArch for all my retro emulation needs but this is nice for any systems not supported within RetroArch.
I’m not sure if you’ve ever tried ShaderGlass or if you were involved in the implementation of your shaders but if you do, let me know if you have any suggests on making it look more like what is output in RetroArch.
Hello everyone. I wanted to clarify: did I understand correctly that the shader update in RetroArch should be done before replacing the sonkun and crt-guest-advanced folders? In other words, if I update the files after manually replacing the folders, will it be incorrect?
I’ve noticed an oddity with the 4k Aperature Grill presets. On black backgrounds, the left side of the screen is very slightly brighter than the right. This even shows up on screenshots so it’s not a monitor artifact.
What’s curious is the default CRT Mask of “10” has brightness on roughly ~30% of the left side, while a CRT Mask of “5” pushes it to about 60% of the left side of the screen.
I can only upload one screenshot, so I’ll show the more obvious one. You can also see it with the CRT Mask parameter unchanged, but it’s more subtle.
04-4k-crt-guest-advanced-hd-aperture-grille-u-normal-s-video.slangp, but CRT Mask parameter changed to “5”:
I’m unable to get any of sonkun’s presets to load on Android (Retroid Pocket 5). I’ve tried each of your updates starting from 2025-01-19-r1 all the way to 2025-10-12-r1. I’ve also tried both vulkan and gl drivers, as well as different RA cores. The guest presets seem to load no problem, just not the sonkun ones.
I’ve read this guide a bunch of times to see if I missed something, but I can’t get them to work. In the meantime, I still had the older sonkun presets on my PC, which are working fine on Android.
Please, I have a simple question if someone can help me.
On the installation instructions it’s said "For this update you will also need guest.r’s latest shader update" and the link takes you to the “2025-01-23-r1” of the guest.r shaders.
BUT, that version it’s not the latet anymore. So, canb I use the real latest version of the guest.r shader (right now it’s the “2025-11.02” version) and get the same results on the Sonkun presets? Or it must be the “2025-01-23-r1” version?
Thanks a lot for your response and wonderful work.
A last detail: the latest version of guest.r on the topic of the libreto forum (“2025-11.02” right now) is the same as the one from RetroArch if I run the update first (“Update Slang Shaders”)?
Current repository version is “2025-03.30”. It should also play very well with Sonkun’s presets, since they haven’t recieved updates since a while, but latest guest-advanced versions have some additional tweaking options, if you want to start or change something by yourself.
Were your shaders designed for use with HDR as well?
If so, are the HDR settings on Retroarch (Peak and Paper White Luminance) sufficient, or are there other recommended changes in RetroArch settings or in the shader parameters?
By the way: I tried to find something here but found no information about it.
Hello, I just wanted to give you a big THANK YOU for your work. I’m European and PAL artifacts shaders are rare to find and not so realistic. But your PAL shader automatically unlocked memories of how my NES looked back in the day on my small 14" TV, with the Mario green pipes having that “dance” of diagonal lines when the screen scrolled, or that subtle image shaking when the game is on pause.
I currently use a Samsung SyncMaster 19" CRT at 2048x1536 with your 1440p shader and I’m loving it, unlocking more memories like when I first played the N64 on a store, or playing a PSX on a friend’s house. I’ve been using emulators since the Nesticle and ZSNES times, and I don’t think it can get much closer to the real thing, thank you very much for this collaborative work. BTW my kids of 4 and 6 are also loving it.
Never used shader glass but I’m sure with all the new updates guest.r put out something has most likely changed to make my presets break or something. Just coming back on the scene after months of being away and I also noticed after I downloaded the latest guest.r shader update something looked off with my presets right away, I nailed it down to the “LUT 1 Toggle” setting, after turning it off things seemed to appear normal again.
Hmm not sure why they won’t load either, my is really old and outdated now plus I’ve never used a Retroid Pocket so I can’t even try to test it myself.
Thank you for the compliment and glad you like my pack. Technically you can use guest.r’s latest update but there’s been some kind of change I’m unaware of that has altered a setting in the “grade” shader that I use, it’s the “lut 1 toggle” setting, you’ll have to turn that off or colors look really strange.
No they were designed on a standard 4k lcd screen, I don’t use hdr nor oled. I actually advice turning any kind of hdr off as I’ve got glow and bloom settings cranked up through the roof already to brighten up the image.
Wow that’s amazing, not only are you enjoying them you’re passing down the fun to your kids as well. Thank you, it’s words like this that keep me motivated to continue trying to improve them and I will. Stay tuned. I also posted some new screenshots in guest.r’s thread as well, first new pics in months actually.
It wouldn’t be right to just return empty handed without some kind of gift now would it? Been a while since I posted any new preset, just to get the ball rolling here’s some samples of me trying out for a new look:
Unzip then move or copy and paste the presets directly into the root shaders folder not shaders_slang.
These presets use the latest guest.r shader update so be sure to grab that here and install his update first before loading up a preset.
Trying for a different look for this year, try them out and see if there’s anything I should add, take away etc, all criticism welcomed. All presets now use “mask 6” across all resolution types. No hdr needed here I got bloom and glow settings cranked up that will blind you so turn hdr off lol.
Huge fan and have been using your shaders exclusively for years. Curious about the 2026 version, since I can’t imagine them getting better (but excited to update the slang filters to latest without breaking anything lol) hope you do aperture style masks again too!
And please don’t remove the little banding effect when the resolution changes. That small detail adds SO MUCH to the charm of the filters!
The only sad part about your shaders is that they’re so good, I wish I had the same experience with other emulators like PCSX2, Xemu, Redream, Dolphin, etc. though I’d think setting up Reshade presets would be a tall order.
