Parallel core VS Mupen64Plus-Next

Which is the better, more up-to-date core to use right now?

For many years the Parallel Core was lagging behind Mupen64Plus-Next but now it looks like the opposite. in 2026 there are a metric ton of commits for Parallel but only a handful for Mupen64Plus-Next (and they were even regressions).

So what’s the verdict? Is the Parallel RDP/RSP the same version in both cores? And what about the Mupen core updates? I know both cores are based on the Mupen source but which one is more up to date?

Yeah, dunno. ParaLLEl-N64 has an updated ParaLLEl-RDP plugin:

and I think the mupen64plus-core component was synced against upstream, too, but I’m not sure about that.

Most of its work for the past few weeks has been improving the HLE RSP to work with LLE RDP plugins. It still has some microcodes that are unimplemented, but most games, even the weird ones, should work with LLE RDP and HLE RSP for a big speedup.

Mupen64plus-next has indeed not gotten much attention in the past year or so.

I don’t know how they compare directly, but I would say it’s worth giving ParaLLEl-N64 another shot.

Last I checked, HDR only worked with Mupen.

I’m mostly interested about compatibility and accuracy. The extra features come second IMO.

You’d think we could get an accurate Goldeneye intro by now too. But noooo… lol x.x

To be fair, not even Ares can get that intro to the correct speed.

There must be something really difficult, timing wise, about this intro.
