Please show off what crt shaders can do!

You can lower dark pixel bright boost all the way to 0.00 with a gamma of 3.0, but I wouldn’t recommend it as the image becomes pretty washed out with these settings. I think we should probably stick to the preset settings for gamma and then adjust bright/dark pixel brightboost to maximize dynamic range. A 0.50/1.50 combo looks pretty good, IMO. I make no claims regarding accuracy, though. A “correct” setting for these values won’t necessarily be correct anyway once we do stuff with masks, scanlines, gamma, etc.

Yes good point, I’m also finding that sticking with the default gamma and working from there works best. I’m currently not brightboosting the “bright pixel” as much as then the bright (especially white) lines become less “rounded”, so I’m currently at about 0.5/1.1 for dark/bright pixel boost.

I’m actually finding that if I change the bright pixel brightboost a lot above 1.0 then it alters the look of the bright (scan)lines, which seems a bit tricky as you would expect those to be defined only by “scanline beam shape low / high”, but the high one is clearly visually changing when using bright pixel bright boost bigger than about 1.1 (lines become more square / less rounded). Of course all depends on your PC screen, gamma, ambient light, viewing distance, various parameter settings, etc…etc…

To add to the previous findings on the dark pixels bright boost setting, the “neutral” value differs per scanline type. Scanline type 2 dark pixel brightboost at 0.5 about equals scanline type 0 dark pixel boost set at 1.0.

The “neutral” values seem to be (dark / bright):

  • Scanline Type 2: 0.5 / 1.0
  • Scanline Type 0: 1.0 / 1.0

A lot of these settings do more than one thing and a lot of them have similar effects, so it becomes almost impossible to define “correct” values for these settings even if we know what our target is.

By “rounded” scanlines, do you mean the top/bottom of the scanline or the edges where one color meets another color?

I’m unable to post screenshots right now (keep getting an error saying the file size is too big, even though it isn’t). Can you try these settings and see what you think? These are the settings I’ve been using for SNES. SNES has a more saturated output so gamma needs to be 2.4, I think. NES and Genesis are fine at 2.2 (Of course, this also depends on display conditions and viewing environment).

This is good to know. There’s also the “scanline 1&2 saturation” parameter, which I have set to 100% in my settings. Not sure what effect this has on the minimum bright boost value.

I meant the top/bottom of the active line (where the bright color of the line meets the dark line in between). But it’s interesting, as it is not happening with your preset. It seems when using your beamshape high/low settings, then you can use higher bright pixel brightboost values without loosing the “roundness” at the top/bottom of the line.

Quite a grungy look you’ve got there with the preset, I’m digging it. Personally I’m not a big fan of the lottes mask, but it looks quite good with your settings.

Here’s another tweak of the Guest shader. This time I put the saturation back to default and tweaked a couple of other things here and there, all of my last posts I would up the saturation by a little making the overall image look too spicy, this time things are neutral. For all of the double shots I took two different shots, one using the NTSC composite filter in the core options and one without it. I prefer the composite look because that’s how I played all of my 8 and 16 bit systems back then. In any case check these out:

I made two presets one for slang and one for glsl using the “stock” version shader

Slang preset:

I see you guys messing around with that grade shader, I’ve yet to dabble around with that but maybe I’ll give that a try in the future.

Grades pretty fun, imo.

I don’t know if it’s just me but your composite shots seem to be sharper than your non-composite shots.

You don’t have to use the stock method, if you feel like taking the time to renumber everything in notepad. (It takes like maybe 5 minutes, maybe less depending on typing speed. Then you can just remove these passes. I’m not sure if it makes it any faster though, lol.)

Yeah it’s that NTSC option that does that I believe. I didn’t make any kind of changes to the shader, all I did was switch that core option on and off.

I’m getting a fair bit of noise in the images even after setting it to desktop mode. I’ve even tried to download the images through imgur in desktop mode, I’m still getting the noise. It’s showing the image I downloaded at full size (1920x1080).

I just uploaded the images to a different site as I was having trouble with it too. You should be able to see them now even on your phone without having to switch to desktop mode. Try now

I’m still getting noise on my tablet but it might be less, at the very least it’s registering as a png now, instead of a jpg.

Maybe try pasteboard?

I just switched out the very first pic and put a pasteboard link, see if it works.

Seems to be better. I’d probably wait for someone else to comment before switching image hosts again, it may be an issue on my end. 🤷

Lol I’ll put it back to the way it was in the meantime. For some reason I can’t upload them directly here as it says the files are too large

Nesguy is having the same issue with file size currently.

Maybe a common issue then.

Seems to be recent, or maybe nesguy wasn’t hitting the files limit size until now, lol.

I need to get on my PC to test it sometime soon…

Yeah, I’ve been experimenting a bit with grungier looks lately. While I love the xVM look, it can get a bit boring after a while and it’s fun to experiment with different looks.

If I’m going for something that resembles a PVM/BVM, I just use no mask; at 1080p you don’t have enough pixels to do high TVL masks and low dot pitch/high resolution masks aren’t visible at normal viewing distance, anyway.

If you remove the mask from the settings I posted it should be very xVM-like, although you might want to increase “beam shape high” and/or “scanline bright” a bit for thicker black gaps over bright colors (at the expense of reduced dynamic range).

If you want the best possible picture quality you shouldn’t use a mask, since using a mask decreases the maximum contrast while leaving the black level unchanged. You should also leave the scanline parameters I posted as-is. You might be able to raise scanline dark or lower scanline bright a notch or two before you start to get clipping or crushed blacks. Scanline dark 1.25 seems good. Like I said though, this might get a bit boring after a while.

At 1080p, the only masks that make sense IMO are Lottes’ streteched dotmask and the guest-dr-venom slotmask. All others are too fine or too coarse, or do things to the image that are undesirable. I still need to test the Easymode masks, though.

I think I might actually prefer the guest-dr-venom slotmask to Lottes but I need to play with it some more. If you want to give the GDV slotmask a try, try these settings and let me know what you think: mask type -1.00, slot mask strength 0.65, slot mask width 2.00.

The old MAME standalone (0.55 something) had an option called “scanlines”, it just introduced a black line every pixel line, from what i remember if you had a CRT VGA monitor it looked exactly as a BVM that everyone seems to love nowadays.

PS and paying ridiculous prices too lol

Yeah, that’s what the “interlacing” shader does. Run 2x scale to your monitor and it blanks out half the lines and then flickers them on interlaced content. It looks good and is much, much easier than making a bunch of 240p modelines.
