There is already auto detection for the in-game screen, so it could be the same for overlays indeed.
box’s overlays for GBA and PSX are implemented in the last version: Thanks!!!
Guys, I’ve slightly modded BOX’s GBA overlay to make a comfortable portrait layout and I realy like the result. Tablet users should like it, I don’t know about phone users however.
Changes:
- Removed the ladscape and the blank layouts.
- Moved the Quick menu button to the bottom of the screen
- (The main change) Moved the controlls 200 pixels up, now it feels so much more comfortable. Like playing an actual GB. Before I felt that the controlls were situated too low and it was uncomfortable to hold the tablet.
- Moved the d-pad 15 pixels left, making it slightly easier to reach.
- Made the main d-pad hitboxes slightly larger
- The Quick menu now occupies only the lover half of the screen, you can see the game and the overlay text now. Also it looks better.
- The Save state and Load state buttons automatically close the Quick menu now. (saw a feature request for this one somewhere on the forum) dl.dropbox.com/u/4278141/alphmod.rar
Would it be feasible to use an image to enable scanlines as an overlay instead of buttons? i.e.
I don’t need buttons since I use the PS3 pad
@Rick74 Ha, that’s a clever idea. It should work fine, but the results may not be great due to the scaling of the overlay image. It’s worth a shot, though.
It’s a nice idea for sure. And there’s nothing stopping you from doing that right now in fact.
Rick, put your scan_lines.png in the same folder as a .cfg text file with the following in it, this should work:
overlays = 1
overlay0_overlay = scan_lines.png
overlay0_full_screen = true
overlay0_descs = 0
I saw some overlays(?) in an article where the left and right black blanks had a skin. How to get them and how to install?
Thanks so much!.. It absolutely worked!.. Now I need to find/create the right overlay. I’m such a scanline whore and shaders aren’t working on my Nexus 7 yet. Anyone have any tips to get the scanlines to look even?
I tried making one based on snes’ native resolution and it didn’t look right in-game, though I don’t know why. I’m guessing you’ll have to trial-and-error your way to something that works out.
@PresidentZer0 That’s one of the ‘border’ shaders. They force integer scaling and then load an image with a game-sized box cut out of the middle. Are you on PC or Android? If Android, I haven’t seen any in use, but they should work, theoretically.
Boy, would I love to start seeing people make their own scanline overlays and start sharing them here.I saw a tutorial online using Photoshop to make scanlines, so I’m going to dig into that later.
@Rick74 Yeah, that would be pretty sweet
There should be a ton already floating around from MAME, including some phosphor ones that look pretty decent.
This was a great idea, Rick74. It turns out that you can use any of the 1080p border shaders from the PC port along with integer scaling for stuff like this (all of these screenshots come from a phone): More borders here: http://filthypants.blogspot.com/2012/09/background-shader-for-retroarch.html
And it’s pretty easy to modify MAME overlays for fancier scanline-y effects, like this one (wrecks gamma, but looks pretty good if you zoom in pretty far): Here’s the overlay file itself, if anyone wants to try it (could use a bit of tweaking; I cropped it fairly close but it doesn’t line up perfectly with the sides of the game screen):
The borders should scale and work for any phone with an aspect ratio of 16:9. I didn’t notice any performance hit on my HTC One, but if anyone else has performance problems, I’d be interested in hearing about it.
EDIT: One more This one is from NeoGaf user richisawesome’s border pack (make sure you turn off the downloader option; it’s laden with adware/spyware, apparently): http://www.sendspace.com/file/6sljgw
EDIT2: I made a scanline overlay that should line up with pixels properly in landscape orientation (without integer scaling). It doesn’t look great on my phone, but probably looks much better on a larger display, like a tablet: http://www.mediafire.com/download/oniucjj0ddaosdz/scanlines-landscape-noninteger.png
EDIT3: Here’s another one that should line up exactly with NES/SNES games in landscape, integer scale on a 1080p phone/tablet: http://www.mediafire.com/download/qdhxlfx3xcfkgx9/scanlines-landscape-integer-nes-snes.png
I haven’t been too happy with the shader scanlines, so I made an overlay that combines resolution specific scanlines and some tweaked RetroArch buttons. Just place the .png and .cfg files in a folder and point the RGUI there. Change the overlay opacity to about 30%-35%…
I’ve attached 2 different resolutions [1920x1080] and [1920x1200]. Make sure you grab the correct one.
It’ll probably only look correct if your screen resolution matches either 1920x1080 (most new phones) or 1920x1200 (Nexus 7 2013).
If you like scanlines, these look terrific and look to be the correct size, intensity and thickness [IMHO]
Enjoy!
Made some changes in original psx-cfg file for more comfortable playing on iPad. At this moment there is only a new landscape view. Maybe on the weekends I will finish portrait mod, and maybe then I’ll start change the rest of overlays.
Leave comments.
@Boris_T Great
Thanks for sharing this. As I mentioned in another thread, we really need some good tablet-size overlays, since the existing overlays are designed for phones. Perhaps once we get a few, we can bundle them with the main program, particularly since it’s just a matter of modifying the cfgs.
Had some problems with my internet, but now it’s ok. So, as I promised here is the full (landscape/portrait) iPad compatible cfg for psx.
Thanks thats very nice :D!
Oh, you’re welcome. As soon as possible I’ll try to fix other overlays. At this moment I haven’t much time unfortunately.
