Problems with NES/SNES cores

Hey there. Is this a thread for general issues with nintendo cores?

I have this problem:

Some games just refuse to launch leaving no error message. Contra [J] and Crisis Force [J] in NES, and Mega man X2 [U] in SNES. I’ve tried different settings, changed cores. I fixed NES games by switching to FCEUmm. But Mega Man X2 doesn’t want to work what ever I do.

Why this might be happening, any ideas?

Hey, this was in the wrong place, so I moved it.

Contra [J], at least, won’t run in Nestopia unless/until you have the NstDatabase.xml in your ‘system’ folder (i.e., as if it were a BIOS). FCEUmm doesn’t have this issue.

For MMX2, if you’re using a bsnes-derived core, of which we have quite a few, you need the cx4 special chip dump. The bsnes-mercury cores also have a core option to use HLE for special chips, which removes this requirement but if you want to do this, you also need to enable the core option to respect accuracy-affecting options.

The various flavors of Snes9x shouldn’t have any issues with MMX2.

Sorry for the inconvenience, I’m new round here. Your forums don’t have descriptions under them so I had to guess where to post.

Anyway, thank you for help, hunterk! NstDatabase.xml fixed my issue with two NES games.

And I have to admit I was careless with MMX2. I use Launchbox and it loads cores with command lines like -L “cores\snes9x_libretro.dll” and I was using the wrong slash. Feel dumb now.

Thanks again

no worries, glad you got it going
