Redream core doesn't upscale anymore

Since around mid-July 2017, I can’t find any option in the redream core. It used to have an Internal Resolution which gave nice results (Power Stone for example). I know it’s less authentic, but I wonder why this option disappeared and if there’s a chance it’ll come back ? Before july 2017:

After july 2017:

Reicast also has this option, but its development is dead I think.

The core could really do with some core options. There’s an issue open for hooking them up in libretro already: https://github.com/inolen/redream/issues/77

Is Reicast development actually dead?

Is ReDream a viable alternative moving forward?

Redream has been getting almost daily updates, while Reicast is pretty sporadic. The author of Reicast has actually been helping with Redream; it might be a nicer codebase to work with than NullDC (what Reicast was based on).

I was comparing Demul with Redream recently and Demul is still the way to go to get the closest to real hardware for now. Redream still has noticeable graphics and sound issues, but if the dev pace keeps steady I can see it catching up in a few years.

Reicast doesn’t support the latest CHD format, which I converted all my GDIs to, so I don’t use it anymore.

I’m confused now. Was this broken in a recent Reicast update? All my GDI’s are in CHD and they load up in it ok. or has the CHD format somehow evolved?

That’s good to know, I’ll play around more with ReDream then, see how I like it if it’s gonna be the standard moving forward. I also didn’t know about Demul, I thought that was garbage for some reason… All my info on DC emulation seems backwards or mislead haha.

Well, if you’ve never tried Redream or Demul you wouldn’t know. I had to reconvert my GDI’s to CHD with a newer version of chdman to get them to work with those two. But the new CHDs don’t work in Reicast, since it hasn’t been updated to work with the newer format. The newer format is nice since it offers even better compression. The latest chdman always comes with the latest MAME binary release from their official site. And you can save this as a .bat file to put in any folder with chdman.exe to batch convert GDI or BIN/CUE dumps to CHD (Beetle-Saturn, Beetle-PSX, PCE-Fast and Genesis Plus GX all support CHD now, so it’s good for those too):

for /r %%i in (*.cue, *.gdi) do chdman createcd -i "%%i" -o "%%~ni.chd

Interesting. I didn’t know it was something that really changed. I’ll have to play around with it some, thanks for the info. This gives me toys to play with tonight hahaha.

As for the actual topic of this thread (since I inadvertently side-lined it.) I’m glad to hear there’s an issue open for the core options already.

Maybe it’s just 'cause I’m so familiar with Reicast at this point, but I can’t imagine not being able to change the cable type. That made big differences for at least 2 games. (Sonic Adventure needed RGB to even run correctly, and Shenmue running in VGA makes VGA specific saves for some reason) Not that you could play Shenmue in Reicast :frowning:
