I’m not sure what the libretro port of Gambatte does, but the mainstream version doesn’t emulate the boot ROM, only its side effects. Edit: seems like the libretro port patches the original CGB boot ROM to emulate the side effects of the AGB-CGB boot ROM.

Patching the original gbc_bios.bin sounds very clever to a guy like me that don’t know much of how things like this works behind the curtains.
It get’s the job done, retains the original GBC boot logo just like on GBA and the Advance Shop is open which makes the regular end user like me think I’m playing a GBC game on the GBA.
Yeah regular Gambatte doesn’t even have official support for the GB and GBC boot roms, I think it was 2016 it was added to the Libretro port.

I don’t like the palette changes and I don’t think the rings you get in the shops are worth it though.

I tend to stay away from game hacks in general, I want clean, unaltered game dumps so I let the emulators work these kind of things out from behind.
I have no doubt applying game hacks is convenient but it’s not for me.
