RetroArch Wii/Gamecube Releases (v1.0.0.2)

ah i see. well i guess i can understand that, if its that much work just for like, 10 games or something. though i’d really liked to try out garou once xD

about mother, i dont know, i never got it to load on that one, it always either stuck at the loading bar, or it gave me a white screen and nothing happened. though it might be possible that the emulator got a little bloated over the years and stopped working with the biggest games?

oh, i just remembered, when i tried the virtual boy emulator, it seemed to run very slow.is that normal for now? or are there some options to tweak like frameskips and such?

I think others have reported mednafen-vb being slow, but I don’t think there’s really anything to be done about it, except overclocking the Wii’s CPU :stuck_out_tongue:

Maybe if/when they get Wii U homebrew going…

Was that overclock option there before the last update already? I only found it just now in the new version. Is it save to use it?

Your screen issue is called overscan, and nearly all CRTs cover at least some of this area with their bezels. Most console games account for this, but GBA ones won’t.

Anyway, new release later tonight. It’ll fix the USB issue and the Snes9x speed regression.

I’ve always wondered about this. Why is it my psp, android(a shitty one), and even my DS can all play neogeo large roms full speed(probably use frameskipping though). They are all weaker cpus and gpus than the wii’s and they are all 3 running from micro sd cards. They create cache files of the large roms in order to run them. Why cant retroarch do the same? I’m sure there must be some reason, I’m just curious as to what that reason is.

It’s a RAM issue.

Yup, these ROM files eat up what limited remaining RAM the Wii has by the time RetroArch launches.

0.9.9-fix1 uploaded, fixes the USB issues and Snes9x speed regression.

I was trying to find this in earlier posts, but what exactly is a speed regression?

Also, could someone link me to a clarification on what “Level 1” “Level 2” etc emulator mean? I gather that it refers to how fast a port can utilize the emulator (Mednafen-VB is level 2, and I knew the VB emulators on Wii don’t run fullspeed), but I’ve never been able to find a clear breakdown.

Thanks!

Just registered to thank you for your work. Retroarch for Wii is a masterpiece and I gratefully thank you for not neglecting Wii updates.

BTW, NES Chip 'n Dale 2 now is not so stuttering on some scenes and I can complete it to the end, a lot of nostalgia.

New version is awesome! Especially nice is the overclock for the SuperFX games. So far, I’ve played through the first few levels of Yoshi’s Island, and the few instances of slowdown are now gone (with the overclock). Still gotta try out the level with all the monkeys. One thing I noticed, and this is related to the CPS1 and 2 cores - Forgotten Worlds only allows you to start with player 2…player 1 start doesn’t work. Also, in Ring of Destruction CPS2, only the directionals, coin and start work. No attack buttons working as of now - I wasn’t sure if this was brought up before. On a similar note, its really nice that Cyberbots and Dynasty Warriors now have the controls hooked up now. Also, for the people mentioning bigger neo games, its more like 24 or 25 that are too big atm. Not the end of the world, but some of them are some of the best games on the system and it would be nice to see them someday if the guys have extra time. I don’t suppose an easier solution would be compressing them like on Virtual Console? I have no idea how difficult any of that is so its really just a question. Anyway great update on an already fantastic emulator(s)! Thanks guys for all of your hard work.

There’s always Mednafen Wii for good Virtual Boy & Lynx emulation (and small sized PCE CD games). For all else, there’s RA. If only IR was supported for lightgun games of the various platforms, there would be nearly no need for standalone emus for the cores it supports.

==EDIT== Just tried the 0.9.9.1 SNES core and needless to say, WOW! FX overclock makes quite an impact on games that use it. Also, Kirby DL3 has proper speed now. So, another core perfected? I 'd like to think so

Great stuff! I will try it out later today as I was having the HDD issue also.

Work actually giving us a surprise half day today too! Let’s see, mow the lawns and do other jobs around the house for the afternoon, or play SNES games? Hmmm.

Haha I know all too well the dilemma of work or play, sometimes I just wish I had a 10yr old I could abuse to do all the chores around the house like they used to do to me XD lol

HDD issue is resolved, however, I was in the middle of Super Metroid and my save file is absent on 0.9.9. When I regress to 0.9.8.4 it is intact. I suppose this is to do with individual settings from 0.9.8.4 that are incompatible with 0.9.9 and therefore the save file does not show up?

Hello everyone , I’m a new member. First of all I want to thanks the developers for this great emulator.

I tried to download the fix for retroarch Wii 0.9.9 but anonfiles don’t work for me ( it does not open the page in opera , firefox and chrome ). Is it possible to download in another site ?

Suggestions: I think could be cool to include in retroarch an emulator/loader for triforce arcade games called quadforce , it allow to play mario kart arcade GP 1 & 2 and now also f-zero AX with quadforce 0.2 , but I don’t know if it is possible due to Wii hardware , all what I know is that this loader/emulator uses the DIOS MIOS to load triforce games ( only the three I have mentioned ) but cancels retrocompatibility with gamecube games.

I never had that issue with save states going from 0.9.8.4 to 0.99, there were no major emulator core changes, so the saves should theoretically still be intact. What you should try is, load the save state in 0.9.8.4, make a native in-game save (such as when Super Mario World prompts you “Save and continue/save and quit?”) Not the save states, but in-game native saves. From there, try creating a new save state, then go to 0.99, as all the saves I made on the old version remain on 0.99

No, this is an actual in game save. I didn’t use save states while playing this game at all. In 0.9.9, I start the game and the 3 slots say “No Data.”

Make sure to identify the save directory. In 0.9.8.4. it was /retroarch/sram in the new one it is /retroarch/savefiles. You can make 0.9.9 to use the old directory by configuring the path, from the options in the menu

The save state/SRAM path is set ‘differently’ (ie. right) now. Odds are it tried to load your SRAM/save state file from the same folder as the ROM previously - which is now not the case.

If you need to see to which path it is saving your SRAM/save states, go to ‘Paths’.
