Rewrite game in MAME - Can't proceed

Hey Guys,

I’ve finally got the correct set of MAME roms (0.191) and almost everything is working great.

I’m trying to play Street Fighter 3 - 3rd Strike and running into a problem. When you start the game it tells you that a new CD-Rom has been entered and that it needs to rewrite the game.

Makes sense, it was a CD based system and it’s the first time I’m loading it… HOWEVER…

Nothing I push on the controller or keyboard will advance past this screen… I can move up and down between “Rewrite the game” and “Cancel” and the little guy is dancing so I know it’s not frozen…

But I have pushed everything I can think of to try to accept the “Rewrite the game” option… and nothing is working.

How can I get this to proceed?

You have to wait and it takes a like 15 min or something. There is a no-cd ROM that you should use instead.

You have to wait 15 minutes before you can even select “Rewrite the game”?

I didn’t know there were no cd versions, does that replace the romfile AND the chd, or just the chd?

Dunno, I always play it through FBA, which just uses the ROM.

It’s the one named sfiii3n.zip.

You can hit spacebar to toggle fast forward and the wait isn’t as long. After the first time, you should never have to wait again as long as you keep the sfiii3 folder inside “[save folder]\mame\nvram”. I’ve upgraded MAME several times and haven’t had to wait through that screen again (well, it shows for a few seconds at boot). I think I didn’t like the no-cd version because it wasn’t in English back when I tried it, but that may have changed. I use the sfiii3u version currently.

Yeah I could only find the japanese no-cd.

I don’t mind waiting for it to do the re-write at all…

But I can’t select the rewrite or cancel options. Nothing I push makes it start re-writing.

What do you push on your normal setup to make it go?

It’s whatever you have P1 Jab Punch assigned to in MAME’s Input (this Machine) menu.

God I feel SO stupid now.

The buttons weren’t working because I hadn’t mapped them for this game yet.

All the games with more than 4 buttons, I seem to need to remap the (This machine) mappings, despite them being proper in General.

Like, it said it was mapped to R, but it equated that to the wrong joystick command so nothing was happening hahaha.

Anyway, that totally fixed it. so THANK YOU!!!
