Snes9x and MSU1 Audio Distortion

Hey everyone,

I hope all is well. I’ve come to report what I believe to be a bug with the Snes9x core and MSU1 patched roms. When loading the patched roms, the audio is very loud and distorted. It’s like it’s crackling. This does not occur when launching regular roms or playing the MSU1 roms on the regular Snes9x emulator. It could be possible that I may be doing something wrong as I am also new to RetroArch. Could anyone verify that it’s working fine on their end? Any assistance would be appreciated. Thank you

Same thing happening on my Laptop with RetroArch and the SNES9x core updated to the latest git. Interestingly, my Shield TV is running on an older git build of the same core and the audio is fine.

It’s good to know I’m not the only one being affected by it. I’m going to assume there’s no way we can get older versions of that particular core, right? I really wanted to start using RA as my main SNES emulator, but this is hindering me. :slightly_frowning_face:

You can compile any older version by checking out the desired revision at github.

It’s probably related to some volume changes that were made with MSU1 stuff awhile back. We’ll take a look at it.

There’s some pending fixes from upstream in the current PR.
Perhaps that’s just that (I don’t use MSU so I can’t confirm).

by any chance, runahead is enabled?

I have runahead enabled on both my Shield TV and laptop with the SNES9x core and only the laptop gets distorted audio.

good for you if using msu-1 and runhead works at least on one device. using runahead always distorts msu-1 for me (i dont really use runahead, just for testing stuff)

MSU1 with/without runahead worked fine on an older git build of the SNES9x core on both my Shield and laptop. But I recently did a core update of the SNES9x core on my laptop and not my Shield. Now it is distorted on my laptop with/without runahead.

Seems to have been fixed in the latest SNES9x core git.

**Edit: Spoke too soon. It’s working fine on my laptop, but no sound at all on my Shield TV now with MSU1.

**Edit2: Runahead was causing it to have no sound. Seems to be fine without run ahead with MSU1. Still, that’s different than before as I was able to run MSU1 with runahead on a game like Secret of Mana.
