New sonkun crt guest advanced presets thread

I appreciate the kind words, you must really love my presets lol. Thank you, yeah this release should hold over for a bit, I think I can chill out and do more gaming and less tweaking for a little while. I’m glad my presets aren’t too resource heavy so that they can work with most people’s set ups.

You’re right in that other masks could help in covering other ground (pcs) that could benefit from them. That definitely gives me some motivation, I’ll see when I’m ready to start tweaking again.

By the way everyone please go re download the link again if you grabbed it already, I did a quick tweak adjusting black levels for both the svideo and rgb presets. The blacks were too high in brightness since I increased the “gamma correct” setting on both of those, I went and matched the black levels on those presets to the rf/composite ones to keep everything unified.

Your presets with ScaleFX are exactly what I was looking for in retro gaming. So yes - I love them - Finally thanks to you I can only think about playing, after so much research and testing. Your future plans are great, but now enjoy your proper rest and the glory of your work. While waiting for future updates, I already have a lot of irons in the fire to play with

I’m glad you’re loving it, I see you’re wasting no time playing your favorite games with them. I’m not sure what else I can do more at this point to improve the Slot Mask look besides maybe try to decrease moire by a little bit more. I finally got the “look” I wanted for a long time which is a “gritty” looking coarser mask with thick but not too thick scan lines, the look I got in these presets are pretty much perfect to me and the magic glow took everything to another level.

I guess my final goal in the end will be to have a pack that includes the 3 common masks which are Slot Mask, Aperture Grille and Shadow Mask. I already did Slot Mask and Aperture Grille shouldn’t be too hard to put together with just mask 6. I’m curious about Shadow Mask though.

I’ve actually already put together an Aperture Grille styled rgb neutral preset:

Simply place them into your shaders folder after extracting not shaders_slang

Hi Sonkun, Here are some snapshots of working with the “Aperture Grill” system. In this case I used the 4:3 aspect ratio together with Integer Scale, of course I tried the ScaleFX version. Rougher looking but still beautiful and effective. If I may, also because I’m denied in certain configurations, it would be nice if you could harness your shader inside a screen overlay, even generic, just to make me understand, like the author of the shaders koko-aio has. Anyway great job - I really like it - and thanks for your work.

Hey Rob hope all is well.

How does it look rougher looking? Scalefx is suppose to make it look smoother looking lol.

Does his shaders load up with a overlay like how the mega bezel shaders do? If so I don’t plan on implementing such a thing. For overlays the Bezel Project is my overlays of choice which you yourself would have to install.

Also besides Aperture Grille I’ve put together what I believe is my first accurate looking Shadow Mask preset:

I think I got the mask right but not 100 percent sure. You can try that out as well in this post.

I was referring to the aspect of the mask, the ones you use seem more “smooth” to me, but it is my impression and in any case the result with Aperture Grill is excellent, it could cover the subject of PC monitors. Thanks again for your fantastic work.

Tried it, it really deserves this shadow mask adjustment! Only the image seems a little dark to me, but excellent result.

Yeah I would more than likely brighten it up a bit to match the other presets if I was to put together some presets. I really like that mask though, probably my new favorite next to Slot Mask. Aperture Grille has always looked boring and plain looking to me but it’s still a common mask that was used on crts so I respect it.

I totally agree with you. However, they are excellent ideas and excellent implementations. I look forward to future developments. Congratulations again for your work.

I also noticed that the shadow mask manages to give a natural smoothing effect without using the Scale FX - unbelievable but true - if my eyes don’t deceive me.

Imagine when I DO add scalefx to it then, might become smoother than butter. I look forward to eventually adding those two new masks to the pack, not sure when I’ll get started on it though. Just letting my latest update make its rounds for a bit.

I’m super curious - but I’ll wait since your last update is so much stuff - but the road you’ve taken is glorious.

You can test it right now by loading the aperture grille scalefx preset of your choice, going into the parameters and changing the “crt mask size” to 2 and the “mask stagger” to -4. That should turn aperture grille into shadow mask upscaled.

At least that’s what I did for 1080p. I’m not sure if those same two settings will apply for 1440p or 4k

You’re right, it’s a butter - and I love it - it just needs a color touch-up, but that’s a minor thing.

Oh wow look at that. And I see you’re using 1440p so that confirms those 2 settings work on other resolutions besides 1080p, 4k should give a similar result as well thank you for testing it.

Yeah I’m definitely gonna end up including those 2 masks in the near future.

Here’s a little sample of what I’ve been working on for my upcoming shader pack update:

Scalefx version (scalefx threshold parameter setting turned down to 0.01):

I should have a new update out before the weekend.

Great Sonkun! Here are some screens I made with your work. The first ones are with Scale FX:

And these are without ScaleFX:

A curiosity: what changes with Scale Fx by changing that parameter you were talking about?
