Updated Gradius 3 4K Vertical Overlay
Finally got around to completing this. I’ve updated the artwork with higher quality sources and did some additional cleanup. I also kept the instruction card colors as they were originally this time.

Not sure if anyone is closely maintaining the Google Drive, but I just did an install of RA + MB from scratch and applied the gdrive pack. I can add more feedback as I go through everything.
-Outfoxies params are empty, so generic image fills the entire screen when loaded.
-Unsure if everything shared in this thread is supposed to be on the gdrive, but Splatterhouse was one I noticed missing.
Thanks for all this work, I just installed on a 43" and love it!
Thanks for letting me know @SmedleyB! I’ll take a look at Outfoxies, it’s all manual so very possible there are some mistakes out there. Feel free to message me if you find more.
Not all the overlays are out there yet by any means, this is something I just work on occasionally right now. If you or anyone else wants to help out with the maintenance I can grant access.
I was wondering how you been lately and tagged you asking in one of my own “health update” posts over on my MagicHat's OrionsAngel Mega Bezel MAME Arcade Setup. Glad to hear your positive progress and recovery is going well! Hearing stories like yours gives me hope for my own issues. I’m going through phases of ups and downs myself with my Ulcerative Colitis but doing much better than I was back in July/Aug but I recently fell into a renewed flare up so I’m back to the “bad days”. I’m just hoping I’m one of the lucky ones who get to celebrate at some point for going into remission but I’m fully aware of what needs to be done if I’m not one of those lucky ones. (J Pouch Surgery).
Thanks @MagicHat! Hopefully it’s just a temporary setback for you and you will be back to where you were again soon. My only advice is to try to keep hoping for the best. I was told by a surgeon that I will never improve much and that it would be a miracle if I ever get past 20% function. Yet 4 months later I’m here at 42.5. After he told me that I should basically give up hope I was so upset I couldn’t work for two days and my hands were shaking with anxiety. I wish I could go back to those days to tell myself not to worry, that he was wrong and that I’d be much better soon. Just keep doing everything under your own control and hope for the best.
I just met with an old coworker of mine and he had stage 4 mantle cell lymphoma. They gave him 2-3 months to live. But he got on a clinical trial for a new medication and he is currently in complete remission 18 months later.
Just hang in there, things can turn around!
Karate Champ 4K Vertical Overlay (Technos Japan / Data East 1984)
“Karate Champ” is a 1984 arcade fighting game developed by Technōs Japan and released by Data East. Players use two 4-way joysticks to perform 24 moves in a one-on-one fight between two karatekas: one in a white gi (player one) and the other in a red gi (player two or the CPU). Successful players advance through bonus rounds and increasingly challenging levels set in a dojo and a tournament stadium.
Here’s my small contribution to this awesome community.
MAME zip file: https://mega.nz/file/7x0A0BaJ#EXhHrF-BcIly3QI3bknzVAAR9XW6bj57bi2TEzx9HVs
Love it - such a classic, it always reminds me of IK+ on my Amiga 500! I’ve never played it with duel joysticks mapped for one player, going to give that a go later! No contribution to the community is small, the time and effort are much appreciated!
Thanks, appreciated. It’s one of my favorites plus it was featured in the movie Bloodsport.
Some of my favourite games are immortalised in moves, the older I get (and the movies) the more amazing it is to see things like Afterburner II in Terminator 2 and all those Data East games getting wrecked in Robocop 2! There must be a list of arcade game appearances in Movies somewhere, I did see one a while back but they missed out on a few - that’s where stranger things pulled me in, i’m such a sucker for nostalgia like that!
Cliff Hanger - Edward Randy 4K Vertical Overlay
I’ve been meaning to create an overlay for this game for a while but it had dropped from my radar until I saw Video Game Esoterica’s review recently: Edward Randy - Video Game Esoterica. Created a new custom marquee, bezel and instruction card as this game was never released outside of Japan.
I’ve also fixed Outfoxies and added @PapaShine’s Black Tiger overlays. Both the original and custom are out there and you can switch between them by alternating the commenting in the blktiger.params file. I prefer @papashine’s take myself and made it my default, awesome work!
Updated Sky Shark 4k Vertical Overlay
I found a blurry photo of the complete CPO for this that I was able to upscale and clean up enough to get it into a usable state and have added it to the overlay. I’ve also given it an uplift in terms of shading and did a little work on cleaning up the bezel. The source for the bezel I have is pretty low quality, if I can ever find better quality scans I’ll update this again.
This is really surreal, I had a friend over on Saturday night and we smashed through a few classics, then I showed him cliffhanger which for some reason I had kept on pestering him to play, he’d never seen it before but was pretty impressed and fancied completing it - I went to get a drink, checked my phone, and saw your overlay pop-up! I’ve been meaning to play through this properly for years, I’ve only really done the first couple of levels so it was a real joy to drop your overlay in and complete the game! Thank you
And it’s really good to hear you’re enjoying the custom overlay for Black Tiger, I’m really pleased with that one
That’s amazing, I timed that one impeccably! I’m also thrilled to hear it’s already gotten some use! I think my next overlay will be for Sega Ninja, which I recently became enthralled with. It will take some time though as I have to recreate the bezel and CPO in vectors from photographs.
I’m looking forward to your next masterpiece
Here’s a vectorized Sega Ninja bezel, just need to do the CPO now I have to thank the owners of Barcade in Chelsea, NYC for sharing nice photos of the artwork for this (and @AlexC, who contacted them for me). @Orionsangel, feel free to use it as always:
I haven´t seen an original Karate Champ cab before, but I played this game a lot in generic cabinets. both instructions labels are the same, corresponding to red player on the right. I´m not sure if they were the same for both player, considering they start facing each other.
@K-rnivoro That’s exactly how the 2 Player cabinet bezel looks. It should be flipped but it’s not. I played on an actual dedicated cabinet three weeks ago with an identical bezel.
Thanks for sharing these resources for us low-down and horizontal types!
It is flipped in the original cabinet! Look at the positions of the “levers” in both labels. Right/left are flipped for both levers.
