4K Vertical Overlay Community Contributions

You know I found an old post somewhere in the MAME forums I think where some users were talking about reflective bezels, and that evolved into an actual working implementation of bezels with real-time reflections.

Someone can correct me if I’m wrong but it’s quite possible that that pre-dates the Mega Bezel Reflection Shader which brought real-time reflective bezel shaders into the limelight.

So, maybe that old MAME implementation might still be lurking around out there somewhere?

I read that thread back then. It was used to fill in the pillar box sides on a horizontal screen. Unless I missed it were there any versions on a vertical monitor that mimicked what the Mega Bezel shader does?

Whatever was used in the BGFX shader then should still be in it now.

If you read more of the thread on the same page I linked to, you will see the way things evolved.

You’re right. I think this is what evolved from that thread. I’ve had it installed but forgot about it. I have the BGFX version.

Anyone see/play the demo for Asura The Striker? It’s a spiritual sequel/remake of Space Harrier. Looks really cool.

Reminds me allot of Plannet Harriers, never played it but has a similar energy - will check it out!

I thought I’d share some progress, I’ve been chipping away at this Star Wars (1983) overlay @ArsInvictus and I were talking about, like space harrier, this is a full 3D build (with allot of polish in photoshop for subtle effects and nuances) there are some great vertical overlays of this out there from the community, but the plastic bezel image resources are often low res and brightly lit, hopefully we’ll be able to fix that!

That plastic molding looks really cool. So much better than those old low-res photo images we have been using for years. Great work. :+1:

This looks amazing @PapaShine! Looking forward to seeing the end result!

Looks great so far. “The Empire Strikes Back” will be covered as well since it was just a conversion kit and marquee swap in the same cabinet.

Have you considered creating a 3D modeled overlay for Spy Hunter? That’s another one that would look amazing with the flashing van button on the yolk and bezel lights for the weapons. :grinning:

Awesome work. Looking forward to the finished overlay.

Thanks @Drybonz! I’ll share a more horizontal friendly 4K render of it when I’m done for people to use :+1: for the vertical I’ll use a narrower Lens to keep everything tighter in the portrait view, we can go a bit wider for horizontal

Thank you @HyperspaceMadness  it’s basically done, just playing around with some details!

Yes, two birds with one stone! I’d like to tweak the lighting, so there’s a little bit of variety, but that’s probably not necessary!

Glad you like it! Yes, I have thought about building out a lot of the physical cabinets but the community has knocked out some great overlays that work very well using photography - several are in various states on my hard drive like outrun, thunder blade too.

Spy Hunter is definitely one on my list though! I can easily get all the lights working and interacting with the game, I can’t believe we haven’t already got a vertical overlay for this classic :exploding_head:

Thanks! I can see this becoming the standard for resources to replace the old ones.

Hi all, I’ve been in and out of the hospital for the last couple weeks with the flu, pneumonia, heart failure and a stroke. Hell of a couple weeks.

But I was feeling up to doing some art today and continued work toward a Hook overlay. Here is a recreation of the original bezel:

Damn, hell of a couple weeks indeed. How are you doing now? I hope all is well and you make a full recovery.

Yeah, it will be a while before I’m fully recovered, but if the treatments for my heart work I could be in much better shape in 6-12 months.

My eyesight is back to normal (I’d lost vision in one eye from the stroke), but still dealing with headaches and fatigue. I’m going to be focused on rest and rehab for a while.

That’s a hell of a few weeks for anyone, so grateful you survived it!!

I hope you get all the rest you need and you’re able to the very best recovery possible in the next few months - as you say the meds are incredible now :crossed_fingers::crossed_fingers:

I hope you are able to live as stress free as possible and find some time to enjoy this hobby while you rest up, enjoy some of these beautiful overlays and play some of those cabs you’ve been building! It’s like you’ve built the perfect recovery space for this!

Just thought I’d share out some updated and new designs I did for someone on here who requested them for an actual arcade cabinet he’s putting together. This is an updated Ketsui bezel formatted to fit a Dynamo HS-5 cabinet as well as some new marquee variations also sized for that cabinet:

I’m planning to update the overlay for this game with this artwork, and I’d like to come up with a Cave branded control panel overlay to go with all the Cave game overlays as well.
