4K Vertical Overlay Community Contributions

Thanks @Duimon, I was checking out the Phantom Canyon NUC models that are a little older but had RTX 2060 GPU’s built in, I would think that’s powerful enough? Any benefit for ARC above that?

I have a system with an rtx2060 and it can run the heaviest Mega Bezel preset at 4k. So a 2060 would be good, but the fan does go up. A 30 series would handle the heaviest very comfortably

Not that I’ve heard of with the onboard chipsets. The A770 discrete are supposed to perform as well as the RTX 3050.

In any case, if you set them up correctly, using overlays with the Mega Bezel will allow you to use a MUCH smaller viewport (Up to 70% smaller on a 4K vertical setup.) I would think that a 2060 would work well enough.

This is a valid concern. You’d definitely be better off with one of the newer OLED displays with a heatsink or maybe a high quality LED or QDLED might be your best bet. I vary my content and have no issues with burn in on my almost 7 year old OLED TV.

Maybe someone can give one of those new TCL mini LED’s a try with the less aggressive dimming algorithm. That might be a decent middle ground and they’re cheaper than the competition as well. I’m talking about the 800 series as the 900 series has a strange quirk of a bright horizontal line running near the top of the screen.

@ArsInvictus Absolute classic of a game and finally a very worthy overlay to enjoy it  really wonderful to have one of your beautiful overlays in time for Christmas, and a classic like this is the ‘icing’ on the cake :snowflake: looking forward to some possible collaboration in the new year, Hope everyone is having a great Xmas :christmas_tree:

Thanks @PapaShine! I’ve started looking into TV and PC options and it will take me a while to make my decisions on those things. But in the meantime I will work on some overlays as time permits

I’ve started on putting Vendetta together. There was no high quality marquee scan that I could find so I upscaled a low resolution file and replaced all the logo art. Should be serviceable for an overlay. The CPO is available so I can assemble it now. If you have any of the button and stick renders available to share please send them my way! But I’ll see what I can do with what I have right now.

Here’s the marquee in case anyone wants it:

@PapaShine, I believe there was a completely different art set for the UK release of this with a brick marquee. I was wondering if you had any personal interest in an overlay with that artwork?

Hi Ars… do you have your components (bezels, marquees, etc) available for download anywhere? They look great and I would like to use them for some bezel art (personal use), but I don’t use a vertical setup.

I have a big local directory filled with stuff I’ve gathered or created over time, but it’s not organized in a way that would make it easy to share. PM me if there’s something specific you are looking for and I’ll see if I can help.

Be sure to back that thing up.

Oh yeah, it’s backed up to cloud nightly, just for archival purposes. 2 years of my free time is in that directory…

@darkand, that is looking incredible! How complete is it? Do you have all our overlays in there already? If it’s ready let us know how to set it up!

Just an quick update. FinalBurnNeo Run-ahead mode and Hi Scores saving has been fixed. Just make sure to not use the second instance of Run-ahead.

Also make sure to download the Final Burn Neo (Hiscore) file from the Online Updater -> Core System Files Downloader first and update everything.

I am running with 2 frames of reduced latency for all games and everything I have tested is now saving.

I was working on the exact same thing months ago with that same attract mode developer. I am planning to get that going again. I love how you added pinball as well.

I am trying to get a turnkey image created. I had issues with attach mode and raspberry pi. Also issues with overlays and the Linux version of retroarch.

Hopefully, with a turnkey image, more companies would start making vertical cabinets. It seems all people use is CoinOps with those older trash overlays.

Thanks for the updates @tekn0. I’m currently working on getting my new PC set up and installing RetroArch with Launchbox/BigBox for now. I’m actually going down a different route for my set up this time and will be getting a 4-player pedestal cab from GameRoomSolutions and pairing that with a 55 inch Samsung QN90B TV. Samsung offers a fully automated wall mount that will rotate between landscape and portrait automatically via the remote.

What I’m hoping to be able to do is use the TV in 16:19 for modern games and set it up with an IR blaster (probably via IFTTT) to have the TV rotate to vertical mode when using MAME. Ideally the front end would also flip orientations automatically. I think I can set this up with BigBox with a setting they have to remember view layouts between platforms and set up different themes by platform. If not, another option would be to have one front end for vertical games and another front end for the rest and switch between them. I will be setting up a StreamDeck and could program buttons to switch between front ends, but that’s obviously not the ideal.

Anyway, just sharing my current thinking for this. I would imagine that others would also like a similarly flexible solution so I’ll post again with my progress on making this work smoothly. I’m still waiting on delivery of the pedestal and the mount but hopefully I can work on it by next weekend.

The images are complete and the videos are incomplete.

Very Nice. I did not have video previews in my version. Are you making them all yourself from screen recordings? This was my version of the same theme last year.

I also thought about looking into the virtual pinball front end “PinUp Popper” to see if I could modify that to fit the vertical arcade thing.

I’m recording the videos through the geforce graphics card. I tried the program PinUp Popper but on windows 10 in 4k it had several bugs.

These vertical overlay setups look cool but how do you deal with the lack of proper subpixel emulation of CRT phosphors due to the masks and subpixels being in an incorrect orientation?

Is it something that’s just ignored by the vertical overlay community?
