Analog Shader Pack v3 pre-release

From the onset, not to get everyones hopes up but this is NOT the version 3 pack. However I recently had a close family member fall seriously ill (good thing is she pulled out of it!) and I am also in the middle of our biggest project at my job of the year, so the full pack will be delayed some more. However I figure I wanted to give something to tide people over and release the upgraded Vintage TV shader pack since it seems to be the most popular. Will also let me get some feedback early on too. I’m too tired to post screens so will just post one of what to expect, would love to see the community post their

This shader set arrives in 4 flavors, all 4 quite different as evidenced by the comparison shots.

As usual, set your screensize to 4:3 and integer scale ON for the best picture quality.

Also some things have changed, I discovered that unfortunately scanlines and shadowmasks on some shaders can change depending on what resolution people’s desktop is running at. Personally I have a 1920x1200p monitor which is unfortunately for many people not a common resolution. Because of this i’ve had to go in and re-work a few parameters to make things look right at 1080p which I assume is the most common. This is another factor in the delay for the full pack.

I am including two versions, a 1080p and 1200p version. As for people with 1440, 1600p or even 4k monitors,I envy you and wish I could build something for those but don’t own one, unless you want to buy me one :stuck_out_tongue:

I won’t speak too much on what you can expect in the full pack but let’s just say it will be massive

Oh! I’ve just notices the new pack! It is so much better! Now besides S-Video I also like Composite  Still as I posted here http://libretro.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3998&p=38903&viewfull=1#post38903 I’d like to know how to make S-Video brighter. Also I’d say that the flickering is very noticeable. Especially in Composite and S-Video. I know you are aiming to authentic look, but it is very bad for eyes :frowning: I’d propose to make it more subtle. But overall they look incredible and it is huge surprise! Thank you!

You can change the amount of flickering in the shader parameters menu.

Thank you! But I tried it and it says “No shader parameters” :frowning: The only think I could do is to remove flickering from passes. Still some subtle flickering would be nice

I don’t know why that’s happening, but I suggest you try the latest release of retroarch, maybe there’s a problem in the version you are using.

Awesome, Solid. Look forward to trying these. One thing I would love to see is MAME’s Humbar effect. In MAME, using some low values, it adds a nice subtle 60hz humbar effect, looks amazing while the emulation is running.

Ok I found that Threaded Video ON causes “No shader parameters”. You were right, it is very comfortable to edit shaders parameters there. Many thanks! I have no more questions. Good luck!

Thanks, the pack looks great with the Mitsubishi TV overlay you made few months back, it really adds to it. As for the humbar, not sure how I would accomplish that, maybe someone else could chime in

Also one thing I discovered doing this pack by accident is some of the little details that come out, for example if you try Final Fantasy 1 on the NES in composite mode and during the character select screen, you’ll notice the fringing/artifacting actually makes the diamond in the thief’s ear actually shine/flicker along with the nunchuks in the fighter/ninja’s hand. Anyone who says the original game designers never designed their graphics around these quirks of low-res NTSC signals is full of it IMO :stuck_out_tongue:

How can I turn off the rounded corners? I couldn’t find an option in the parameters.

I recently had my 48k ZX Spectrum converted to composite, and using my JVC TV overlay + Retroarch Fuse + your latest composite shader, and my composite Spectrum connected to my real JVC, side-by-side it’s amazingly close. Good work, solid.

Corner size should be the option you are looking for.

Cool, you should take a side-by-side shot for comparison.

I tried that already, but corner size is set to 0 by default. However I found that oldtvshader-arcade.cg also has some corner rounding.

As I don’t have any knowledge of coding, I tried replacing the code with the oldtvshader-composite.cg from the V2 shaders and that just worked

Ah yes I recall now I had to use that to mask a faux corner over the picture because I didn’t like the particular way lottes curved the screen, didn’t feel it was “vintage” enough. But glad you found it

I love these analog shaders. Thank you so much! Can’t wait for v3 full release.

Oh my god I can’t wait to try this tonight.

Sorry everything i so crazy for you. Glad to hear your friend got better though.

So I finally got around to trying this out.

I really like it for the most part.

The only thing I’d say is the ‘glow’ coming from whites is really really strong on Svideo, Component and RF.

Otherwise, Love it!

Just an update, got alot done over the memorial day weekend and think its close to the point I can start consolidating everything into folders and start making visual previews and charts for all the settings.

Also SkyHighGam3r I agree the glow is strong, there will be another variation of the vintage pack coming within version 3 that is a softer picture and blooms more toned down , think of this version as like a beat up old 70s TV and the new one coming will be a bit better quality early 80s tv

Are you interested in getting them into the shader repo? Are you modifying any of the shaders directly or is it all using existing parameters?

I appreciate the suggestion hunter, honestly though It’s best not to pollute the repo, there is a mix of modified shaders where I went in and tweaked the code mixed with old versions of .cg shaders being used because the speed on them is better and less gpu intensive (particularly hyllian and lottes), along with the newer versions where features are required.

Most likely what I will be doing is including a separate folder of all major .cg’s along with my modifications much like John.Merrit’s overlay pack.

This is going to be big, expect roughly 30 or so different monitor, television and arcade variations and settings, and that’s not counting the NTSC versions for the TVs and monitors.

What? No 90s love??? Lol

That’s great though. I got torn between the old one on this one for composite. Lol Really looking forward to trying these all outout.
