Beetle PSX HW; OpenGL shows black screen

This has happaned since the release of Vulkan afaik. I can use Vulkan just fine but I need the ogl renderer to test something out. Both the RA driver and core options are set to ogl. Running Win7-64 with radeon r2 280x. There is sound right from the bios boot and inputs do register but it’s just a black screen.

Are you completely closing RetroArch and then reopening it after you change the driver and core option? The driver change won’t take effect unless/until you completely close and reopen.

Yeah I am. Tried various core options too.

How do I get a log saved?

launch from a command line with --verbose --log-file=log.txt

Ah, it’s the Cg shader. Disable that before you launch.

Can’t be, I load a config with shaders disabled before launching the game/core. Now I tried lunching directly into the default config without shaders and still nothing.

I’m having the exact same issue with the build from July 1st. Vulkan works almost flawlessly, but running openGL results in black screen with sound playing.

I’ve tried changing HW Context, changing RetroArch video driver, disabled all shaders, and playing with Core options (PGXP/Resolutions/Cropping) and nothing has resulted in OpenGL render working. There was one curious thing that happened though. If you change the front end (RetroArch) video driver to anything other than OpenGL (I tried Vulkan and dx9)and the Beetle PSX HW core to OpenGL then it causes the core to fall back to Software rendering it seems. But I think that’s normal fallback operation.

Anyone have any hot tips on how to get openGL working? Vulkan looks nice, but I can’t capture it with Dxtory.

I have the same problem on windows 10 and radeon r7 270. I think it’s a problem with radeon drivers

@christ776 MacOSX is missing support for the GL Core Context that’s required for several of our GL cores, including beetle-psx-hw, in its drivers.

@hunterk, thanks for your answer. I guess this is where macOS X shows its shortcomings. I wonder if a Metal2 backend could be the only way out (which of course sounds like a huge effort).

I’m starting to think the current versions openGL render is just broken.

Any update on this? I have the same problem using RetroArch 1.7.3 and Beetle PSX HW 0.9.44.1 4a75947 on Win10. I have an AMD Radeon HD 5870 with the latest drivers.

To be honest I have dozens of issues with psx hw core and opengl. Is anyone currently taking care of the core?

simias wrote it and he’s working on other things right now. He might revisit it at some point, or maybe someone else will try to get it up to parity with the vulkan renderer, which has a few less bugs /shrug
