Better way to integrate roms and other noob questions

Hey there, Im just trying out lakka as an alternative to getting a pie and doing retropie, and I do like the UI quite a bit. I’ve only got questions about a couple of things: 1, Is there a better way to add roms than over the network or through another distro of linux? I was hoping there would be some sort of file manager where you could plug in your usb and just copy or move the files off. 2. for some reason, when I map out one of my test pads, it wont remember the layout after a reboot 3. some of the preinstalled games wont boot? the only one that works is the numbers one. 4. what is some advice for hooking up arcade joysticks buttons and trackball?

If you could answer any of these questions that would be phenomenal and it will help me out greatly!

Thanks for stopping by and reading!

1.) Personally, because SD Cards just get corrupted so often for me when using the Rpi2 Platform, I use a USB Thumbstick to hold all of my ROMS on. Also, this way you can have a back up SD card that doesn’t need roms to function. It also helps prolong the life of the SD Card as every time you write/erase to an SD Card you are shortening its life.

What version are you using? The latest versions of the nightlies allow you to keep mapped settings. Otherwise, you will have to save them and reload them every time if you are using an older version.

3.) What games specifically? I only know of the 2048 or whatever it is that is preinstalled.

4.) My advice, personally, is use a PS3 Joystick(Wired) as I use as they automatically configure and you could map however you wish at that point. I’m not privy to how many Arcade sticks are out there or if you really wanted to be fancy you could configure a bluetooth dongle to connect to a wireless one. An XBox Stick may be as easily configured, don’t have one and sure as hell am never buying an Xbox so I can’t test that for you. (Totally showing PS Fanboy side…). If you use another stick they may or may not be supported already.

I’m actually not using a pie :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: for some reason it doesn’t show up when I connect a thumb drive into the system. Im using whatever version was on the download page a couple of days ago, maybe I should switch to nightly though it sounds like there might be fixes that I want in it. As far for games in specific, there is also stuff like doom and quake1 and others that are on there, but don’t run.

I’m actually going to be testing out the wireless 360 remotes later today because I read that they will work with the dongle automatically :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: but other than that I heard there are cards that will translate all the arcade buttons and joysticks into keystrokes, but I’m still not entirely clear on how to do that :stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks for your response!

Also, How do you make it so that when you scroll through all of the emulators, all the roms get filtered to the specific emulator? I thought I saw it on the forum but I cant seem to find it anymore :open_mouth:

re “1, Is there a better way to add roms than over the network or through another distro of linux? I was hoping there would be some sort of file manager where you could plug in your usb and just copy or move the files off.”

I finally settled into just running Lakka off a usb stick. When I want to add roms, I plug the USB stick into a linux machine (running Peppermint OS) and copy the downloaded ROMs to the roms directory on the USB stick (wiht Lakka installed).

I don’t have it running on a computer, but you should be able to connect a thumb drive for the game files. Not to boot from, that(from what I’ve heard on the forums) is somewhat difficult.

I think the fastest way is to use the scp protocol, with your terminal or a graphical utility like filezilla.

Hello, All! Resurrecting an old thread  Lakka stable build for PC from a month or so ago, once PC is connected to your network, will broadcast directly at \<lakka-IP>. I browse to that from my win lappy, and copy ROMs, BIOS, look into the cfg files… If your net autodiscovery doesn’t find the lakka box, look at the DHCP on your router

This forum is becoming an addiction already

I just boot into my Lakka box with a Lubuntu USB/OS and then drop the files into the “roms” directory.

With new version you can get your IP directly in the UI via the menu Main Menu > Information > Network Information.

Good to know, gouchi! That def. make more sense lol
