Duimon - HSM Mega Bezel Graphics and Presets - Feedback and Updates

I thought the same thing, and I tried both a 0 degree and 90 degree gradient. Next to the radial gradient on the disc cover, it yields unexpected results.

I do think it needs something to give it some dimension. I am going to try some diffused fake reflections, akin to the fake reflections on the window.

@HyperspaceMadness

What do you think of this. I added a 95px inner shadow to the edge of the flat area. It acts like a gradient, but coming from the outside edge, doesn’t do weird stuff with the radial in the middle. It’s subtle.

Part of the problem here is that everything is so close to 50% gray. Illustrator uses 8-bit color for raster things like gradients, and mid-tones are out of color range, they suffer from banding like crazy.

edit: I am assuming your approval, :innocent: and went ahead and made the same two subtle changes to the PC Engine CD.

Yes this looks great and adds a nice little touch.

Yeah this occurred to me that there might be a banding problem with a slight but wide gradient. I think Affinity designer actually adds dithering into their gradients to help with this kind of thing.

I wish Illustrator did. Grain helps but it only does so much. I could shift the color darker, like the second version of TurboCD above, but too dark and I think it just disappears. Might as well have no graphic at all.

I have been doing some thinking, and some pondering, :face_with_raised_eyebrow: about this project I am in the middle of.

I first heard about this shader back in March.

An excerpt from my statement about it on a different forum:

"I tried this out and, while it IS cool, the current restrictions on scaling make it a no go for me. I will keep an eye on it tho.

BGFX is maturing and soon I think shader conversion from RA to MAME will be easier. I think my time may be better spent doing other things and waiting for BGFX to catch up."

That was on March 3rd. On March 6th I registered here and posted on HSMs thread for the first time.

Things have sure changed!

I may sound like I’m rambling, (And maybe I am. :innocent:) the thing is…

What the OP on that thread was looking at was the reflection. The reflection IS cool, but if you turn it off, there is a laundry list of reasons to still use this shader, (From a users viewpoint.)

From an artist viewpoint, the things HSM has done to help with creating art for this thing are wondrous! (And if you think youv’e seen it all, just wait.)

So…

The little point I have been dancing toward is that I wasn’t going to do B&W handhelds, the GCE vectrex, and some others, because they don’t give much of a reflection. Aside from the fact that all my graphics are eventually converted to standerd RA overlays, (And you overlay users deserve 4K vector based graphics too!) things like the night layer, the LED layer, and the masking and blending modes of the TopLayerImage, will lend themselves well to graphics for these systems.

My list just got longer.

Thanks for listening.

Do you have the dark TurboGrafx CD version in the same color as the PC engine bezel? Amazing work btw!

Yes I do. The color of the window is also different. I will post a shot when I get home.

Here we are!

I may make a change to all of these. I posted a raster version of the PC Engine CD a few months back, (When I was doing modifications of @Orionsangel 's wonderful work.) where you could see a bit of CD disc in the window.

I think I will do the same to these to add a touch more realism.

Thank you. It looks awesome! I appreciate it.

It’ll be a bit before these are in the repo. They are still a WIP. :innocent:

OK. How are these?

Now you can see a disc in the windows.

If you all hate it I may reconsider.

Overall I think it’s nice, but it feels odd on the turbo duo dark version with a dark background and light window.

It does. I am at the mercy of the Interwebs when it comes to sources, and to be honest, I have never seen what one of these systems looks like with a disc in it. From this pic…

it is plain that the windows are transparent, but pics of the PC Engine CD…

maybe not as transparent. It is also possible that the disc sat too low to be really visible.

I don’t know. I really like how it looks in the other two. I’m going to try to tint the glass a little on the darker one AND the PC Engine CD.

@HyperspaceMadness

How’s this?

Looks pretty nice

I’ll probably tint the lighter TGCD a bit also. Then we’ll call these done.

I figured since I was up to my elbows in NEC, I would go ahead and do this…

The PC-8801! (Complete with the same drive as the PC Engine CD.)

This system is kind of hard to get running, to get the colors to look right I had to use the bios roms from the oldest model in the Neo Kobe collection. (Even the set from the “complete” RA bios set didn’t work.)

I have never seen an overlay for this system, so that is kind of cool.

I will probably do some model specific details on the monitor.

Something weird happened… :open_mouth: my raster effect resolution was turned down to 72dpi and the “LIFT OPEN” text was colored wrong.

Here’s a new shot.

Question…

I was thinking about doing the NEC PC-FX but there are only 38 games for it. The Atari Jaguar only has 50 and I am doing it so…

Any votes for a yes on the PC-FX?

Hello, good night, I would like to thank you all for excellent work, I already used shaders, but you managed to raise this to an unparalleled level, the bezels are a show apart, I look forward to each update of the topic, keep doing this wonderful work, sometimes you don’t know, but there are many people who love your work.
