I have been doing some thinking, and some pondering, about this project I am in the middle of.
I first heard about this shader back in March.
An excerpt from my statement about it on a different forum:
"I tried this out and, while it IS cool, the current restrictions on scaling make it a no go for me. I will keep an eye on it tho.
BGFX is maturing and soon I think shader conversion from RA to MAME will be easier. I think my time may be better spent doing other things and waiting for BGFX to catch up."
That was on March 3rd. On March 6th I registered here and posted on HSMs thread for the first time.
Things have sure changed!
I may sound like I’m rambling, (And maybe I am. ) the thing is…
What the OP on that thread was looking at was the reflection. The reflection IS cool, but if you turn it off, there is a laundry list of reasons to still use this shader, (From a users viewpoint.)
From an artist viewpoint, the things HSM has done to help with creating art for this thing are wondrous! (And if you think youv’e seen it all, just wait.)
So…
The little point I have been dancing toward is that I wasn’t going to do B&W handhelds, the GCE vectrex, and some others, because they don’t give much of a reflection. Aside from the fact that all my graphics are eventually converted to standerd RA overlays, (And you overlay users deserve 4K vector based graphics too! ) things like the night layer, the LED layer, and the masking and blending modes of the TopLayerImage, will lend themselves well to graphics for these systems.
My list just got longer.
Thanks for listening.
