Duimon - HSM Mega Bezel Graphics and Presets - Feedback and Updates

@Duimon & @hunterk I did some further testing and was able to get a fresh retroarch install to not produce moire again (don’t know why I couldn’t achieve this when In wrote my earlier post).

So here is what I did:

I redownloaded Retroarche version 1.16.0, just to be sure and set it up from scratch again. I did not update the shaders within Retroarch.

There was no moirde. For some reason I cannot take screenshots from the parameter settings of the shader, so I’ll have to explain:

The interlace setting is set to 4 by default (whatever that means):

After that, I updated the slang shaders in retroarch and then there was moire.

If I set the interlacing mode to -1 however, the moire is gone (because there are so scanlines, I guess).

Conclusion: I think with the non-updated shaders, interlacing mode 4 did not show any scanlines, for some reason. Was this a bug in the GUEST shader that was fixed in a newer version, so now scanlines DO actually show?

Except for a single 4x4 blend in the guest folder, the Mega Bezel is self contained. No other shader updates effect it.

That being said, the Mega Bezel is included with RetroArch. The most current release version is included in 1.17 but the version in 1.16 is outdated.

When you updated the slang shaders, you updated to a newer version of the Mega Bezel.

Yes, it’s really strange that this issue just popped up after over a year of it looking good on my end.

It’s a pity that there seems to be no solution to this problem except for turning scanlines off or buying a new 4K TV, which I try to avoid.

So for now: turning scanlines off it is.

I might take another look at the DREZ presets, but I’ve had issues with those as well.

Thx for all your input!

You have at least one other choice.

You can also use internal downsampling to match the upscaling. DREZ presets are intended for cores that don’t have internal downsampling.

Internal Downsampling of 1/4.

Internal Downsampling of 1/2.

Fake Integer Scale scanlines at 240p.

All shots are X4 internal upscale and 1080p resolution.

Probably dumb question, but how do I do that?

I know about mupen’s internal downsampling function, but I kind of like the more crisp upscaled look. I know it’s not authentic, but for me, your amaing shaders / overlays + an upscaled image strikes the perfect balance between modernized and old school.

Sounds like it’s probably related to the last updates in the Mega Bezel where I integrated a newer version of Guest. This update would not be in retroarch 1.16 package, but would be in the 1.17 package,as well as when you use update shaders.

So there’s probably something there that it is causing the difference.

Looking at your old screenshots it seems they have no scanlines. To get the same result I would suggest turning on the ”no scanline" parameter to turn them off.

Yes, I guess the scanlines were never there, I just didn’t know until now, haha.

I can get the same result by setting interlacing mode to -1. No more scanlines.

Hey, could you explain how to enable this? I can’t get it to work =)

Sure.

First… enable No-Scanline Mode by turning the parameter all the way up to 1.50.

Normally you might have to adjust the Trigger Res but the default is far below your internal scale.

Next… just increase the opacity of the fake scanlines.

The defaults (Explicit Res of 240p and Integer Scale scanlines.) work fine here.

Next you can skip to the end of the guest settings and play with the masks if you like.

All of the Guest parameters work with fake scanlines just like the real ones.

I guess I’ll be the one to ask the dumb question… but what is the difference between scanlines and fake scanlines?

Real scanlines are based on the actual pixels. Fake scanlines are “painted” on the screen… they may or may not line up with the pixels.

So you can “paint” 240p scanlines on a game that has a 1080 internal res etc. but they aren’t in any way accurate to the original hardware.

@duimon where is the shader I use so I can get that screen gap for the Nintendo 3DS??? I tried uploading the presets .slangp but nothing is happening to the image on my end.

Thx, this works well and looks pretty good, to be honest =)

It is in any of the Nintendo_3DS folders in my pack. If you just want the base preset then it is in the Mega Bezel variations folder.

Make sure you are using the Top/Bottom layout in the core.

If you need any more help, please try to be a bit more specific. (Screenshots help.)

Using the 3D version of the Virtual Boy Preset used to work just fine. I never made any changes to it, I always just used the default configuration. One day I selected the shader and now only the bezel seems to be in 3D while the game display is still in 2D. I have no idea why this happened and I cannot seem to fix it. I have even gone as far as to delete RetroArch and install it again in a different directory, installed Mega Bezel and the Duimon Pack, yet it still does not work. Might anyone have any idea what happened and how I can fix this? Thanks!

There are options for the color output in the core settings.

To get it work correctly you need to set all three options.

  1. 3D mode = anaglyph

  2. Anaglyph preset = red & cyan

  3. Palette = black & white

Edit: looking at this it appears the core uses flipped eye colors compared to my graphic… I may need to revisit that sometime.

Thank you so much for your quick response, this has been driving me nuts! What really confuses me though is why it used to work automatically and what changed to make it stop doing that. I never once touched the Core Options, the 3D mode would just kick in automatically whenever I selected the Preset. Out of nowhere it just stopped working. Perhaps I was using an older version of the core or something like that, but I don’t recall updating it, and I certainly didn’t update RetroArch either.

No clue… the red should be the core default so it should have never happened automatically.

In any case… I am glad you getting some use from the preset. This graphic holds a special place in my heart just for the sheer difficulty. I learned more tricks during it’s creation than almost any other work until the FM-7.

this preset is something else …at first i thought it should be a joke …but for the VB the whole Red Cyan thing really worked well , i use it myself (and all you other handheld presets)

but yeah that had to be painful to make but it was worth it

…it really turned out great and to put some oldschool 3D glasses on is a great throwback

i just have to get some issues from this weird 3D dinosaur magazine i had in the 90s

It’s really damn cool, honestly. I appreciate all the hard work you put into creating this massive catalogue of presets. They’re beautiful and enhance the gaming experience well beyond anything I have ever tried in the past. Thank you!
