Duimon - HSM Mega Bezel Graphics and Presets - Feedback and Updates

You are not missing a thing. I noticed the misplaced preset a while back and fixed it in my working copy.

I think the period in the filename messed up my search and replace.

I must have never pushed it to the repo. I may also have been making changes to the presets. I will take a look.

I requested a new feature that will affect the advanced Vectrex presets that isn’t working the way we hoped, so they will have to wait.

The vectrex stuff will have to wait. There is a fix in, (That I have yet to test.) for an issue concerning the bezel outer corner radius. Right now they are funky and I hate to make any changes if @HyperspaceMadness is fixing it on his end.

I tested the fix and it is good. I am going to wait until the next shader release to fix it. I will also have to do some more work on the TV5 preset at that time.

Here is a WIP of the Atari XEGS.

Have I mention lately how much I absolutely love doing this?

You’d think after so many different graphics that it would all be just second nature.

The truth is that every graphic has it’s own unique challenges. Sometimes I will do a mock-up, load it as a template, look at it and say…

Now how the #!@*&% am I gonna do that?!

While I have collected many, many standard tricks over the last year, much of my time is spent just trying different things until it looks right. I pick up new tricks that way.

The vents on this graphic were a special challenge. :upside_down_face:

I am glad I did the XEGS, I don’t often get a chance to work with color. Console (And computer.) manufacturers tend to keep things pretty neutral.

I will finish this pretty soon and move on to the XE and ST.

I think this one is done.

I made some tweaks to the drop shadows on the top third of the body, added some subtle shading to the bottom edge of the vents, changed the solid color of the bottom third to a gradient, (To give it some depth.) and increased the shading on the buttons.

I also tweaked some highlights, added a very small Gaussian blur to some parts, (An essential trick to make things look realistic.) and changed the color of the buttons based on this image.

You’ll notice that the Atari logo is smaller, and the XE System logo larger, than the real console.

If you look at most of my computer system graphics you will see that there are many pieces missing in the background. While my mission requires there to be some wiggle room for resizing the bezel, I am gambling that most will not make it really small. (Why would they?)

A question that is always hard to answer is…

Exactly how beige was this unit in real life? Half the images I find show it to be almost grey and the other half VERY beige. (Is it beige or is the plastic yellowed from age?)

@akuma22 How beige is the XE? (Since you owned one.)

Hi! I’m super new to this project and am really digging your overlays!

I was wondering if there was a way to use your overlays without using the shader? I’m running Emuelec on an N2 and don’t have enough power to push the shader… but I really want to use your overlays.

I hope this makes sense

Thank you!

Yes. I have a separate repo that has overlay versions of all the graphics. There are coordinates for the overlays in the Readme, for the CRT systems, and info on using the source to obtain the rest.

https://github.com/Duimon/RA-Overlay-Source

I use them myself on my Android, ODROID, and Pi devices. I am probably going to see if I can get a set included in the Batocera repo.

Thank you!

This is EXACTLY what I was looking for!

I had an XE 30 years ago or so but I remember it was gray, even the cartridges were gray, another thing is that they end up yellowing with the passage of time, but they were gray.

The xegs I don’t know anymore, I know that its base is an XE but I have never seen one live.

I will assume they were grey and change my graphic. It makes sense that the XE, XEGS, and compatible cartridges, were all the same color. Thank you!

Here it is de-saturated.

I actually left it 3% saturated just because. I am also (Since I already did the work.) keeping the more beige as an alternate.

I am going to do the same with the XE and ST. (Maybe someone likes it looking a bit yellowed.)

I left the keys a bit beige as I am pretty sure they weren’t white.

I want to report an inconsistency between two preset.

DOSBox Advanced preset has the IBM brand monitor frame

While DOSBox Standard preset has a generic frame

Lol. That is exactly right. The Advanced can do things the Standard cannot. You will see the same thing in the CPC and the x68000.

haha right  but didn’t know this frame is actually something advanced only preset feature now because it was available for Standard presets in previous releases.

NEC PC-88/98 for example has two version, Monitor and Bezel.

It was in the previous version but the monitor was baked in and not scaleable. Also a monitor with an LED is an Advanced feature.

I am wrong about this. :upside_down_face: As the NEC monitors prove.

As it turns out, @HyperspaceMadness has added enough features to the Standard that I may be able to do the IBM monitor.

I will give it a try.

Well damn it anyway. If you can’t believe Wikipedia who can you believe?

They were different colors! :astonished:

Anyway… I am adding the extended character symbols to the underside of the keyboard keys. (If it doesn’t look stupid.)

So I just watched a 20 minute tear down and demo of the XEGS on YouTube.

I swear this thing is either grey or beige depending on the lighting. It literally changed back and forth while I was watching.

It’s like some cruel joke. :face_with_symbols_over_mouth:

My conclusion is that it is a rather dark, low saturated beige.

I added the extended character symbols, (You can see them on 6 visible keys with the default bezel scale.) and tweaked the shading on the keys while I was in deep.

At least I know the 65XE is gray. (And I have a video to prove it.)

There are many XE videos on youtube, the XE series worked well for Atari.

As soon as you have the XE I put some screenshots with the games I had :yum:
