Duimon - HSM Mega Bezel Graphics and Presets - Feedback and Updates

Seems I spoke too soon. :innocent:

I made quite a few changes to the top of the console and resized the vents to a more realistic ratio along the way. (It will never be totally accurate because of the elongated bottom half to fill in space. :stuck_out_tongue:)

I also combined the normal and alternate sources.

edit: I forgot to change the bezel color for this shot. :grimacing:

What color do you think goes well with the background?

I used blue in a previous screenshot.

I made my OCD pass!

Most changes were under the hood, renaming/reorganizing groups and layers to make wading through the source easier.

I did change all the whites in my gray-scale gradients to an off-white that is closer to the overall palette of the graphic. Things were also intentionally asymmetric. I changed that. (I changed my mind.) I also made some miscellaneous changes to other gradients. (Rotation, transparency, etc.) And fixed a couple of things that were broken. :astonished:

BTW… I would like to thank my “Art Director  ” for helping me choose a starting point for this graphic.

Hey all, I have something to show you!

First of all. I have stated quite unabashedly that I was rusty at vector graphics when I started this and that at some point, (After I was done.) I would probably go back to the beginning and improve some of my earliest graphics.

For reasons that will be revealed, I went ahead and did a serious OCD pass on my SEGA Genesis graphic.

I completely redid the vents, tweaked some of the control panel elements, overhauled the cartridge slot, darkened the reflective surfaces and added subtle reflections, then added grain to everything that needed texture. I also combine some separate objects into complex paths, used some clipping masks, and generally tried to take advantage of some of the things I’ve re-learned since this began.

I didn’t do this because I was bored. I had plans and wanted it to measure up.

So…

Based on this image.

(Which shows that not everyone bought a second Genesis to pair with a CD. :astonished:)

I plugged a SEGACD into my Genesis!

Then I unplugged it and…

…plugged a 32X into it!

Then, (Just to be totally cool. :slightly_smiling_face:)

I plugged them both in!

I am pretty close to happy with them. I have some complaints on the 32X but most of what I’m not 100% pleased with is hidden.

These were crazy. With more than 100 layers and dozens of raster effects, these brought my PC to it’s knees. In the end I had to develop the graphics separately, export them, and layer them in Photoshop.

What do you think?

It will be a bit before these are in the repo. I have some tweaking to do, (I just notice a couple things about the Genesis that aren’t right.) and I need to do the Megadrive alternates, but things have been quiet around here and I wanted to show some progress.

That shit is :100::fire:!

That’s personally how I experienced both the 32x and the Sega CD.

Good idea. Looks great.

These are looking great!!! The updates to the Genesis look great!
It’s impressive you could crush your computer using vector graphics! :exploding_head:

I actually bought the Sega CD as the first incarnation with the bizarre double decker thingy (It was also like 400$ yikes)

image Not that I’m suggesting you try to do anything with this, I think the side by side thing you did is great

I was so excited about those FMV games, man ended up being pretty anti-climactic, there were still some cool games on it, although I don’t think I had them, lords of thunder is still pretty awesome looking. Also the Terminator Sega CD version is a completely different game than the genesis regular version.

Also if anyone is interested I have a couple mega bezel presets for the fmv content on sega cd which make all the awful compression somewhat tolerable with use of de-dithering, blur and phosphor mask

Yeah, the double decker was a no go. (From the top all you could see was the Genesis.)

I am glad I ran across the V2 dock adapter photo, I really wanted to use the existing Genesis graphic.

I don’t think it was the vector that did it. Any gradient, especially a gradient mesh, is actually raster. (We are always cautioned against doing them when developing graphics for print.) It’s one of the reasons I am outputting at 300dpi when screen resolution is only 72dpi, I want to make sure they scale well. (Although 300dpi gradients can suffer from more banding.) SVG effects behave better but you should see the performance drop and file size increase using just a single SVG effect. :astonished: (I tried and eliminated them from my pipeline. They are only good for online web graphics IMHO.)

Wasn’t there a very controversial FMV that was involved in some Federal litigation. I’m pretty sure it started the whole game age rating thing.

(Just googled it. “Night Trap” and it was just remastered and re-released in 2017.)

I have gone ahead and created presets for my graphics. They are in a new “Presets” folder in my HSM Graphics repo.

The repo ReadMe contents…

HSM Reflection Shader Graphics Presets

These are graphic presets using mostly the GUEST-DrVENOM preset. (With the exceptions of GBA and PSP which use the LCD-GRID and the n64 which uses the GUEST-DrVENOM__N64)

Until the shader is final I am only doing presets for the “logo” versions of my graphics. I have changed a few default settings, such as, BGImage vignette is turned off, bezel noise is reduced to 10, and I have given most bezels a custom color.

These presets depend on the graphics being in the overlay directory and a bezel subdirectory keeping the repo folder structure. So… the complete path to the images is “\RetroArch\overlays\bezel\Logo”.

Copy the presets into your shader folder. (\RetroArch\shaders)

Load your content and then a preset. I recommend creating a core preset next. If you plan on doing any manual tweaking to the *.slangp you need to make some small change in the shader parameters before you create a core preset. I usually nudge the “[BEZEL & FRAME] Color Value/Brightness” just a bit because such a small change is insignificant.

If you are using a multiple system core, and using it for multiple systems, I recommend creating a content directory preset, and again, making a small parameter change first if you plan on editing the *.slangp.

I will try to keep these updated as the shader is updated.

I hope this makes it easier on some who have had a tough time getting up and running. I also recommend starting with a clean install of RetroArch and following HSMs instructions from the shader thread.

Sega CD and 32X are looking fantastic! :100:

And the addition of presets already customized for your graphics will for sure facilitate for people willing to try it and not being able. Great job!

How’s this?

The Atari Lynx!!

I have been putting this one off for a while because glass is just so damn tough to do.

In the end, instead of trying to recreate the glass from a photo, I just created my own. I don’t think it looks too bad. To complete the glass, I have used a simple reflection as a TopLayerImage. Of course, this can be turned off for people that hate it.

I still have a bit of work to do with lighting, but it’s pretty close.

This is the Lynx II, as an alternate I plan on doing a Lynx V1.

A mock-up.

I wish your reflection shaders just worked out of the box. Load preset and bam reflections. They’re so good. Keep up the great work!

@Orionsangel

Read three posts up. I have made presets and they are available in my Github repo.

And for the record… only the graphics are mine, the shader is the work of @HyperspaceMadness. Without his work I would have never started creating the graphics!

Also, the reflection shader does work out of the box, every preset. It’s only applying my graphics that gets a bit confusing. Sometime in the (maybe) near future, this could get a lot easier.

I will have to put lynx in my cabinet now.

I did an OCD pass on my Lynx graphic…

I did some work on the buttons and gave them drop shadows to add some depth. I also lowered the brightness and saturation on all the text and the “LYNX” logo so they were a bit less distracting. :slightly_smiling_face:

And…

The original Lynx as promised, for an alternate. It was more difficult than I expected. (It seemed so simple compared to the Lynx II. :upside_down_face:)

Hey!!

The SEGA32X, SEGACD, SEGACD32X, and Lynx are all up in the repo, along with the updated Genesis. This includes alternates (Lynx and all Megadrives) and night LED TopLayerImages where needed.

The RA Overlay versions are also up, including night versions.

I will probably do marquee changes to the Genesis graphic for the new SEGA 4K Verticals. I’m not sure if I will do Lynx 4K Verticals, I will have to play around a bit and see.

Shader presets are also added and updated.
