I’ve got a bunch of mame roms from different years and makes and a handful of them work well with the FBA core Lakka supplies but I was wondering whether its possible to also download other arcade cores like the 2003 Mame etc. Any help would be much appreciated.
The MAME 2003 core should work out of the box.
My personal recommendation is to use it with the “MAME 2003 Reference Set ROM collection” that is in circulation, and to also make use of this playlist: http://libretro.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5923

Thanks for the reply I’ll definitely look into the romset but I"m really new to this so what’s a playlist and how do I use it?
I would suggest taking a quick read through these three pages in the Lakka helpfile, I think they will answer most or all of your question:
- ROMs and BIOSes
- Playlists
- Accessing the Lakka filesystem
