I’m having trouble getting Lakka to recognize Neo Geo roms. First question - where is the best place to get Neo Geo roms that will work with Lakka on a PC? How do I configure my Lakka PC to work with them? Will Lakka auto recognize them from the ROMS directory? I know I need to have at least the neogeo.zip BIOS file in the SYSTEM directory. Thanks!
We can’t direct you to any places to get them, but they’re available online. You just need to search for exactly the same ROMset as the version of MAME/FBA that you’re trying to use. MAME2000 = 0.037b5, MAME2003 = v0.078, MAME2010 = v0.139, MAME2014 = v0.157, MAME-git = current (give or take). FBA changes less often, so if you just google ‘fba roms’, you should be fine.
The neogeo.zip does not go in your system directory, as it’s not a real BIOS in the same sense as, say, a GBA or PSX BIOS. You can think of it more like a parent ROM and, as such, it needs to be in the same directory as your neogeo ROMs.
^Thanks very much. So would I put neogeo.zip in the Lakka ROMS folder along with the ROMS? I’ve already tried that and the games don’t show up after I re-scan the ROMS directory. Do I need to install an emulator or is it included with Lakka?
Second question - in Lakka, I’ve created a subfolder called “NeoGeo” under the ROMS directory. Will Lakka be able to add games from this subdirectory upon scanning?
Lastly - can the NeoGeo Roms themselves be left as .zip files or do I need to extract/uncompress them before adding to Lakka?
Yes, it goes in with your ROMs. However, arcade ROM scanning doesn’t work (yet), except for FBA, and it only works in very recent builds (i.e., nightlies) AFAIK.
The scanning isn’t recursive. You’ll have to scan that directory on its own.
Yes, leave them as zips.
Yeah let of for FBA for now.
Got the Neo Geo roms to work. Thanks for the tips!!! Turned out I had the wrong BIOS file in the roms directory. Got the correct one along with qsound.zip (not even sure I need that). Games working good now via FBA. Now I just need to figure out how to add a NeoGeo section to the XMB.
You can write the LPL by hand in the playlist directory.
Or you can upgrade to the latest nightly build, where FBA scanning have been implemented.
Got most of the Neo Geo games to play with exception of Pulstar - is there something weird as to why this won’t run with FBA? Edit: Actually got it to work after getting a FBA compliant version of the Pulstar Rom. If I go to “Get Lakka” now would I be getting the latest nightly? Kind of don’t want to have to reinstall everything but might be worth it if I can get all the Neo stuff to auto scan.
As far as upgrading - I’m using a 64 bit PC. Just flash latest image to USB stick? Is that the best way to upgrade?
There are many ways to upgrade. The easiest one is to go to the Online Updater in retroarch, and get the file with the latest date. Once donwloaded, you have to reboot.
If some important changes have been introduced in the retroarch.cfg by the developers, you may have to remove yours in order to let RetroArch create a new one.
I upgraded to the latest nightly however when I scan my FBA roms subfolder (located under “roms” in the “storage” directory) - the scanned roms are not added to the XMB.
The FBA and MAME roms have versions. The version we use in Lakka is the latest: v0.2.97.38
Let try to find an fba romset v0.2.97.38, and choose your roms from there.
fba rom set v0.2.97.38 scanned fine for me
That’s also what I am using.
