SuperSnes9x has also libretro cores. Windows version is bundled with the desktop version

Seems like current MAME has trouble updating because of updated tools. Hope it’s not going to end up as an out of date core for years. Maybe an updated core outside the buildbot is possible?

Will it be added Officially to the Buildbot?

Here is a new PCSX2 core that’s more up-to-date with the upstream and it’s not a fork, according to the author.

Tested very briefly and it works, but i need to test all other options like GL, Vulkan, D3D, software, etc.

I couldn’t get it to run on Windows x64 using the files provided in the instructions. I tried both Vulkan and OpenGL rendering, both within RetroArch itself and in the core settings.

Try it now, the dll files are not needed anymore. Also, make sure you have the correct resource files in the system folder.

It’s running now, but the frame rate at Internal Resolution x1 (Native) is only 18 FPS - that’s unplayable! The LRPS2 core delivers a full 60 FPS at Internal Resolution x4, while using only 4 GB of RAM instead of the 7.5 GB required by PCEE2.
I’ll keep a bookmark to the GitHub repository and follow the development of this core.

I don’t see a speed difference on my i5 12400 using Windows.

I see you are using the Vulkan renderer in pcee2 and Parallel GS in LRPS2.

On my system pcee2 runs full speed with the same Vulkan renderer. Maybe your system doesn’t handle that as well? Have you tried GL or software? Does the Vulkan renderer run better for you in LRPS2?

Both Vulkan and Parallel GS deliver the same performance on the LRPS2 core - 50 FPS and 60 FPS, respectively, depending on whether the game is PAL or NTSC - but Parallel GS produces a more accurate image in some games, which is why I use it as my default setting.

On the PCEE2 core, the average FPS is 17 with Vulkan rendering, the same with OpenGL, and 21 FPS with “Software” rendering; tests were conducted on the same game, “Assault Suits Valken [SLES-53233] (Europe)” - at the very beginning, there’s an option to choose whether to display the image at 50Hz or 60Hz - I always selected 60Hz.

Could you post your specs?

Doesn’t make sense Software runs faster than both hardware renderers.

Is your driver set to Vulkan? (not the core renderer but the RA video driver). Try changing the RA video driver to something else. Maybe try a fresh retroarch.cfg (backup your current one) to make sure there isn’t something odd there. Also try a different game in case this is a game incompatibility issue.

Can I ask how did you manage to get the core to work? I can’t get the core to work either -Windows x64 version - on Win10.

I can get the core to load on its own (says version e697ad5) it even says found the bios in the ‘core information’, but when I try to load any content (tried isos and chds format) it just brings me back to RA’s menu and says “unable to load content”. --The only thing verbose say right after loading the game is:

Which doesn’t really tell me much. I also have VC++ 2015–2022 x64 redistributable installed as per the github’s instructions. So, I don’t know. For now lrps2 works amazingly well but it’s nice to see another PS2 core. So I’ll be keeping an eye on it.

I did a completely clean install from the nightly build and added only the PCEE2 core with all the necessary BIOS and resources files - the emulation speed really did become normal. Now I’m going to figure out what was wrong with my previous configuration.

I had the same issue until I copied the entire contents of the “resources” folder from a standalone PCSX2 emulator into the RetroArch\system\pcsx2\resources folder; after that, the games started working.

Funnily enough, pcee2 works better for me than LRPS2. The latest LRPS2 core loads Killzone but not WRC 4. A slightly older version of the core loads WRC 4 but not Killzone.

Pcee2 loads all games i tried, without juggling between different versions. It’s also slightly faster when i use the software renderer in WRC 4, in LRPS2 i’m going below 100% emulation speed but in pcee2 i get full speed.

Ofc, i need to test more games to be sure but so far i think pcee2 seems closer to how stable the standalone is while LRPS2 has random regressions and issues that are not present in the standalone.

I can run lrps2 (or pcsx2 standalone) without any issues.

Thank you. I’ll try what you wrote above later on and see if I have more luck getting it to work.

edit: Damn…Just saw that SuperSNES9x also got a libretro core. It’s raining cores this week.

Y–eeep. That was it. Had to copy-paste the ‘resources’ folder of the standalone pcsx2 (after having completed the initial setup and launching a game once) otherwise it couldn’t launch any game:

Didn’t really test the performance yet (the 5 seconds or so I tested looked really smooth though speed-wise fwiw). Needing to transfer the folder from the standalone is not exactly intuitive (lrps2 just needs you to dl the lrps2.zip from the core system file downloader and a bios) but given the core is still early not a big deal and the process might get streamlined down the road at some point.

Anyway, thanks to DemitryCzarevich for the tip and big thanks to WizzardSK for this port.

I found it!
Settings -> Cores -> Bypass Core Info Save States Features - if this feature is enabled, the PCEE2 core starts running at very low performance (tested on several games by enabling/disabling this option and restarting RetroArch).

I don’t remember why I turned it on; maybe I needed it for one of the other cores, but just be aware of this detail. It would be great if someone else could confirm this test.

The description of this option says that it has to do with things like allowing Run Ahead and Rewind. Run Ahead is a very demanding option that most recommend to use with 8/16bit emulated consoles only.

So i’m thinking maybe this option somehow forced pcee2 to use Run Ahead, which would explain this big performance drop.
