Love the interface, trying to get more out of my HTPC, Optical Drives?

I’ve had a HTPC sitting in the basement for years collecting dust. Decided to try out Lakka today and was completely up and running with wifi/bluetooth PS3 controllers and a seamless console experience, fantastic! Now though I’ve run into an issue, that is, my wife doesn’t want to have any more devices hooked up to the television, unless I can replace the dvd player / blueray player as well. Well I’m in luck… sort of… the HTPC I’m using for Lakka has an optical Bluray/DVD drive, but it doesn’t appear that Lakka has any support for Bluray/DVD. Which is fine, the single purpose interface is a big plus. But dual booting seems limited and sort of ruins the push button quality of Lakka, has anyone created a hybrid Media Player / Optical Drive / Lakka HTPC? How does it impact the console experience? Maybe I’m trying to hit a square peg in a round hole.

Optionally, if anyone knows of a USB-booted OS that does support optical drive media playback I could just leave a stick on the machine and do an alternative boot to USB whenever I want to switch gears.

Thanks!

It looks like Kodi/OpenElec runs from USB and can apparently run DVDs and Blurays from disc.

Thanks for the quick reply. I did get OpenElec running from live USB, but the automounted drive for bluray does not appear functional running in this mode. As well as having to hit tab and then type in “live” to boot in live, it’s not a great solution. I’m sure i can find a live USB OS that can do this though, thanks.

edit I’ve also considered installing OpenElec and just running Lakka from live USB. Is there any drawback in using Lakka in this way?

edit edit Apparently my issue with OpenElec is specifically bluray license issues, DVD playback is fine.
