Do you have something more graphically complex to showcase the changes? I like the original, less block-y version but the less glow is good. However, this is only part of the showcase because nes style graphics look different than 90’s style arcade or snes style graphics.
There is almost no banding from the color gradient in the background sunset. Very nice. Can’t speak for the darkness because I don’t have a bright screen.
Sure here’s a arcade comparison. Here’s my current rgb preset:

Playing around with composite now as well.

Best part about lowering the glow is seeing shaded details better like the shade in Ryu’s white gi and the shade on Hulk’s skin. Also gonna try to sharpen composite up a bit more, probably the biggest challenge is it’s definitely doable but depending on the methods used can introduce unwanted artifacts so I’m just trying to find the best balance or just go with the next best solution.
My real problem lately is simply time. Caught up in a whole bunch of other craziness at the moment but will still try and squeeze in a few minutes or so to tweak cause it’s my hobby.
I’m sorry but those are simply unbelievable improvements. Looking quite forward to the next release!
Thank you I appreciate it, I’m hoping the next release will be a special one. Everything I’m trying to put together seems to be falling into place. I’m wondering how I should tackle the rf presets next and how I should change things up a bit there. Ill see when I get there soon I guess.
You’ll only get the full brightness if you view it full screen. You might have to download first or right-click then open in a new tab. If you’re using less than 4K resolution, you can zoom in until it looks good.
Yeah, you do see the lines from Ryu’s kneecaps and the lines in Hulk’s shoulders with the reduction of the bloom at the sacrifice of the minor blending of the gradient in the text at the bottom of the screen that shows the character names. I wonder if there is a way to brighten whites while keeping all the other colors normal like in the second picture?
I just noticed that there is a slight chance in the color of Hulk’s pants and the shape of Captain America’s ear on his character selection screen.
Ah I see what you mean there, from the new composite shot. Yeah I’ll look into fixing that, I’m trying out some brand new filtering settings so that probably explains that.
Is this a good change?
Not sure. For the color change, it doesn’t bother me. As for the ear change, I would need to see other pictures and have them compared.
Making some advertizing for Castlevania AGA. Been testing shaders ages ago on the original version, gfx. were nice for it, but gameplay, scrolling and movement are quite terrible.
The AGA remake is very fun to play though, and the looks improved…
Beautiful graphics and artwork!
Didn’t even know about this version, will have to check it out sometime.
Is this a remake to the original Castlevania in 1986?
The project author states on this:
A reimagined port of the 1986 original but with visuals inspired by Castlevania Chronicles and other non-8 bit titles in the series.
New Release Version (2025-03-30-r1):
Notable changes:
- Included grade D3D (negative) black level fix.
- Minor change to slotmask interaction mitigation.

Wow. Two whole days and I missed this juicy update. Also came back to post my progress from playing around with the last update, went back to playing with colors and saturation in grade once again.
Here’s my old current preset from the old available pack:

On a mission to make those colors pop like never before.
Gonna see what this update is about soon.
I like the changes overall, but it’s a shame the blending seems to suffer somewhat. Also, some details come out a bit differently such as Lilith’s eyes looking kinda droopy. I appreciate, however, that this is a tradeoff vs. clarity which there’s loads of.
A grade bug was also fixed which would mostly affect xbox users. I guess it’s good to know about this new update if older versions produce gliched colors.
Otherwise color clipping can be an otherwordly science. I always liked some degree of it, how much of it can depend on the game also.
As a fun fact some private test versions involved advanced color clipping controls back with the guest-sm and automatic brightness correctures. But this was before gamma correct, which solved some of the problems brightboost only had and guest advanced went the regular min(color,1.0)
path…
