New sonkun crt guest advanced hd presets thread

Hi, sonkun. Which resolution are you setting RA to send to your TV?

I’ve spot graphical differences between real hardware and some alternative setup to connect emulators to send 240p to crts AV inputs. Depending on horizontal resolution, the rainbow effects may be different from real hardware.

Here’s my case using a Wii: When NTSC filter is mandatory?

Converters are obviously their own configuration, normal ones don’t output 240p either.

I didn’t set it to anything at all. I just connected my Shield TV to this converter and then to the tv then it was off to the races. What I do see in my RetroArch config file is “crt switch resolution” set to 0, “crt switch resolution super” is 2560, “crt switch resolution use custom refresh rate” is false and “current resolution id” is 0 if that information helps.

This may be the case, I don’t have the actual systems to cross compare, I was just happy to get some kind of composite video at all on an actual tv.

This was the converter I used, had it laying around for years:

Probably just a standard cheap converter. Afaik there is no converter which allows you to actually replicate real hardware, that would be the ultimate device if you could switch between systems that actually mimics the platform signal accurately.

One thing you could try if you have something available is trying RA with a different HDMI device, like a PC. It’s possible you’ll get some variance in output.

It is a cheap converter, you don’t see the price tag on that thing lol? Plus it’s really old made years ago. It’s ok if it doesn’t mimic real hardware 1 for 1, I just wanted to see some kind of composite output on a crt with those particular games that’s all.

The real fun comes when I get my hands on a bigger TV and then start collecting the actual older like systems like nes, snes etc again preferably with RF input instead.

Nice photos… Enjoy your CRT :grinning: I don’t have a converter, I use CRTemudrivers 2.0 with amd graphics and outputs from VGA to scart RGB, when I can tonight I’ll show some photos…

Hi @sonkun, do you still have your presets from 03-03-2024? I’d like to dig deeper into the issue and see what’s changed that could cause the freezing. So far, I’ve tested these cores:

  • Beetle PCE
  • FinalBurn Neo
  • Flycast
  • Genesis Plus GX
  • melonDS
  • Mesen
  • mGBA
  • Mupen64Plus-Next
  • Snes9x
  • SwanStation

Your presets freeze a game with Beetle PCE, Genesis Plus GX, and Snes9x. Interesting, that Mesen works fine. I thought the root cause would be 240p games…

Actually I do.

Looking in the trash bin I noticed I still have a bunch of old packs going back a few years. Guess I could still archive things if I wanted to.

Thank you! I just tried it with these presets and I still get the freeze. I now suspect the upgrade to macOS Sequoia or the cores to be the reason. As far as I can tell this means the presets are fine. Is there any other Mac Arm64 user who could test these presets for Beetle PCE, Genesis Plus GX, and Snes9x and share the results?

The moment you said you were on Mac from the initial post I suspected it was something Mac OS related. I also forgot which guest.r shader update that old pack paired up with as well, I doubt that has anything to do with your current situation though.

Your presets from 03-03-2024 pair with the version of guest.r shaders you get from the current release of the Retroarch slang shaders.

That’s amazing if it does, figured with some of the changes and new settings guest.r added it would have things looking different or out of whack.

But I found my original post for that pack, I always include which guest.r shader version I’m using on any update I put out if you want that specific guest.r pack I used for that preset pack.

Quick update, I made some small changes to my preset pack, didn’t feel like making a brand new post just for 1 setting that I changed but you can grab the new pack in the 1st post like always. Just changed a setting in my Shadow Mask 4k presets.

Edit as of 10/23/2024: Had to switch one more thing up with the 4k Shadow Mask presets. The previous crt mask settings I was using wasn’t giving me satisfactory results. This should be the last time I have to edit them though, I put up a new pack under “release 4”.

New Version Release (10-29-2024)

Changes Made

  • Uses guest.r shader version 2024-10-27-r1.

  • 4K Shadow Mask presets use new “mask zoom” settings, looks better than ever now (They only work with the latest guest.r shader update so be sure to update those shaders as well).

  • 3-Phase Chroma Scaling/Bleeding setting adjusted on all composite rainbow presets (Previously had faint barely noticeable diagonal lines across the screen on certain backgrounds.)

Screenies (All images are from the 4K Shadow Mask presets only):

Grab this latest pack in the first post.

I am getting the “Can’t apply shaders” message for your shader presets. Any reasons why?

You downloaded the latest guest.r updated as well? My latest pack goes with his latest update exclusively. That may not be the issue but I suppose we can try that first.

Yea I did all of that and it read “Failed to apply shader.”

Hmm. Try deleting everything (both my preset pack and the guest.r shader update) and reinstalling everything from scratch. I wanna iron out that it’s not some old file somewhere causing an issue.

Copy. I will do. I hope this will work

A user on discord recently said my presets wouldn’t load up because my “sonkun” folder had a capital “s” instead of lower case. It was a error on his end but I’m just throwing that out there.
