Yeah likewise, I’m still on the wall about it even now, I just can’t get over how it makes Link’s eyes look in a link to the past. They should look like a rectangle instead they have this weird slanted look. And I’m sure that’s not the only game that has those weird anomalies. That’s why I’m still tweaking it looking for that middle ground sweet spot where I can keep pixels looking smooth but also still keep pixels looking the way they should.

Hopefully I’ll be able to come up with something like that, if not maybe I’ll have to just make do with the way it is. I also tried with xbr but I wasn’t liking the results I was getting there at all. I still haven’t tried fxaa yet.

There is a small catch also as Scalefx has corner filtering enabled by default. Usually disabling the feature helps a lot with keeping some shapes rectangular.

gotta consider too scalefx can have some quite aggressive results over at 8 bit games in particular, making them look too smooth for my liking

Yeah I know what you mean. From what I’ve been seeing though trying out the different scaler shaders in the edge smoothing folder they pretty much all do the same thing for the most part.

I’m running another test this time instead of using scalefx to smooth out pixels I’m using the xbrz-freescale shader. This shader seems to do exactly what scalefx does but imo better (plus it only takes up one shader pass slot in the chain instead of the multiple slots scalefx does)

Here’s a comparison:

Notice Mario’s eyes, guy looks like he’s flying with a sad face. His eyes should look like a rectangle but instead it has this weird slanted look, I notice this weird effect on Link as well from A Link to the Past (@guest.r I tried turning off that “corner” setting, it didn’t change much of anything) and there’s probably lots of other games that may produce that effect.

xbrz-freescale:

Here his eyes look the way they should and you still get the same pixel smoothness, even his mustache has more volume to it that seems to have been “cut” off with scalefx.

oh is quite resource intensive, i do remember indeed it was a resource intensive shader in other emulators too

wait a minute, is just resource intensive with composite over the mix, rgb is going no problems, oh it is resource intensive because it is using a lot of the gpu, my 8gb gpu is suffering with this shader with composite

It seems about gpu resource intensive as scalefx. You’re saying this one is even more resource intensive for you?

indeed, scalefx didn’t had slowdown problems with composite, maybe both shaders aren’t compatible

Interesting. As I was planning to use this instead of scalefx if anything.

i’m looking onto this, scalefx uses less gpu bandwith than xbrz even in composite, my gpu is around the 2500-2600 mhz it uses around 900 mhz in composite

where in rgb xbrz uses around 1200 and jumps to 2100 2300 with composite, i’m using afterburner to look onto this

Prepended scalers increase internal resolution for the crt shader quite significantly. Scalefx scale factor is 3x on both axis while xbrz-freescale preset scales to viewport, which can be very demanding.

It will hurt itself with 4k, so viewport pre-scaling and ntsc might not be a great idea.

I suggest, for best performance, to try to use one of the xbr presets i included in the shader pack. It’s in the /shaders/guest/pre-scaler-presets folder. With xbr you can also set the scaling of this pass from the shader menu (default is 3x, you might use 4x or 5x instead…).

On scalers and NTSC shaders:

NTSC (the 3 passes) shader performance impact stops getting harmless with greater resolutions. First NTSC shader pass scales x-resolution to 4x. If you lower this to 2x or 1.5x… (with a scaler prepended ofc.) the performance jump is very noteble without quality degradations.

Quick math: scalefx scales to 3x, ntsc-pass-1 4x more, the buffer size is 12x larger in horizontal direction than original. It’s much worse with viewport scaling…and you should consider vertical scaling too.

For these situations, hand-made pre-scaler presets are an optimal solution.

Such a shame cause even after trying the scalers in your folder I still find myself liking the xbr-freescale shader the best. Scalefx is definitely the most lightweight out of the bunch but after observing it more and comparing it with the others I like it the least, it does small but weird things with the pixels even after turning certain settings off.

I did notice the “xbr-lv3” in your shader folder is optimized and tweaked differently from the one in the “edge smoothing” folder, it plays nice with your shader right out of the gate so that’s a plus. If I had to choose between the two scalers you have there it would probably be the xbr one.

In any case I think I’m gonna put all of this testing to the side for now and come back to it another time, I want to start working on another project to get my presets back into the Mega Bezel Project ever since Hyperspace finally updated it with the new guest/grade shader.

Was playing around in the grade shader and wanted to tweak contrast and reduce both the white-red and white-green tint settings plus a few other settings. Testing out this new look:

Thank you. I’m still on the fence if I should put out a new update with those settings or continue to tweak it more. At first I was trying to get rid of this greenish tint that effected the whole image, afterwards I noticed a reddish tint so I lowered that as well. I lost some brightness in the process but maybe that’s a good thing? Colors seem to look a little more “natural” now I guess compared with the current pack that’s available.
