Looks pretty decent to me, at least on my cellphone.

Something to think about: motion resolution should probably play a part in this because masks and even scanlines become a lot less prominent without some kind of Black frame insertion when you’re moving quickly in, e.g. Sonic 1. It’s OK for games that are mostly still screen (RPGs) or single screen (donkey kong). So maybe mask strength should take into account some room for BFI. Nice screens, btw.

Yeah I’m not even going to try, not with an SDR display. You need 1000+ Nits for that. I’m not even sure it can be done on the brightest HDR displays

Hi @ynnad4 just go into RetroArch select Vulkan/D3D11/D3D12/GLCore and then ‘Update Slang Shaders’ which sits underneath ‘Online Updater’ on the main menu. You can find the Sony Megatron in the ‘hdr’ folder.

Yup with current technology we probably need a 1000nits to 2000nits display and then we want back light strobing (rather than BFI). If we get a really bright OLED that can do back light strobing I think we can get there. My Eve Spectrum is one of the closest but it’s too dark to have the Sony Megatron AND backlight strobing on.

I’m not sure motion is that bad especially in the horizontal direction. Full masks (as in what the Sony Megatron uses) I think help because there is a lot of black in between phosphors but backlight strobing helps a bit too. You see different motion blur depending on where you look because of what your eyes are doing so you see motion issues even on a CRT especially as you scroll vertically ‘against’ the scanlines. That goes away if you focus on the foreground object rather than the background.

@HyperspaceMadness okay please hold off on bezelfying those presets - @guest.r just showed me a couple tricks involving gamma to get sharper edges and now I have to do some more tweaking. :slight_smile:

This looks good. Which of the Gamma settings are you adjusting? Is it that Glow, Halation and Bloom work better at lower gamma levels? If so, wouldn’t lowering gamma also lower brightness? How’s the balancing act done compared to what might have been done before?

Here are some examples from my latest shader preset offerings! Be sure to load full resolution and zoom in enough until they look right.

Gamma has an effect on lighting effects (bloom, glow). Glow looks very exaggerated at 0.01 at a gamma of 3.00. I think 2.50 is probably the cut-off if you’re using lighting effects?

I’m adjusting both gamma values at the same time (in GDV), then adjusting beam shape and brightness controls. I just started a new thread with a link to the settings I’m currently working on if you want to take a look.

@guest.r I went and tweaked that NTSC Resolution Scaling setting again and this time I found a sweet spot that I like. Raising it to 1.10 sharpened things up just nice, 1.15 or 1.20 is even sharper but I didn’t want to over do it. Added in some light contrast this time around as well:

This may come off as not a compliment but here goes. (The goal is compliment tho :joy:)

Your presets are hitting this interesting place, where to me anyway, they look more like magazine shots of CRTs than actual CRTs. That’s just the vibe I’m getting.

Personally I think they’re a good stylized interpretation of a CRT. (Which honestly majority of the presets on here are just that, stylized interpretations of a CRT)

EDIT: Imho, your arcade preset is doing the magazine thing more than the 8/16bit preset.

I am quite busy ATM and for some reason checked on libretro, but well; I posted the shader I used and you just have to choose the 8th CRT mask and disable GTU on it + somehow make it run off of the VBA filter here: Real GBA and DS-Phat colors

The desert trial map (has sand, vegetation and water) looks so much better with VBA colors alone, it’s amazing
