Would be great and wouldn’t have to download every image for each console as it’s setup currently.

Going to have to disagree with you here.
You see, Steve’s Scraper has its own set of problems, and cannot be hosted on RA’s servers. With the RA, you know what images and systems you’re getting within the framework of RA because it comes directly from the guys who develop, and code, Retroarch (including the Lakka crew). Not only that, since you don’t have to drop out of EmulationStation like you have to do with RetroPie (which I hate that damn Linux distro with a passion) and it’s integrated right into the Lakka menu, it’s MUCH easier to use than Steve’s scraper.

The problem I have with the current system is, it’s missing a bunch or art for games that are common. I have to manually download a bunch for PSX USA (some for SNES and NES). Another problem I have is you have to download a bunch of art for games I don’t have. Just clogs up my SD. =/
It is great that there it is an official repository of images from where we can get the thumbnails, but I agree with TimeFlex that it would be better to download only the required media for the games you actually have instead of downloading the complete platform’s images collection.
I guess that a good percentage of the download bandwidth consumed from Libreto servers comes from downloading the thumbnails. I hope this could be improved in the future!
Lakka really is awesome, but this is by far it’s greatest weakness. I hate that if I want thumbnails I have to download potentially thousands of images in a zip (and use up 100’s of mb on my sdcard) when I might only have a few roms for a given system.
It’s just crazy. If I add a rom, the system should recognise it and download the artwork from a libretro repo.
There is some discussion of the opportunities and challenges of scraping individual thumbnails in this RetroArch github discussion, for those interested in more details: https://github.com/libretro/RetroArch/issues/3010
