RetroArch PS3 releases (v1.0.0.2)

The onus is on you to provide it with the correct ROM set.

Error checking is optional in libretro cores and depends on the core more than anything else. And sorry to say but there is a bunch of stuff in FBA I don’t even want to implement - it isn’t particularly elegant code to begin with and stuff needs to be kept lean, mean and portable.

Alright. Well just got up to date with fba, confirmed an older release for PC I had from years ago does work with those original neogeo roms (0.2.94.98) but the latest from 2013 (0.2.97.29) does not, I guess the PS3 one needs the same as this one, I’ll check around about converting them. Anyway it was just pretty frustrating that the console freezes like that cause it makes testing for correct roms a lot more painful than it should.

Thanks for your answer.

Ok here’s another test:

Rom: ssf2.zip (super street fighter II - the new challengers)

PC 0.2.97.29: works PS3 “FB Alpha RL”: works PS3: Retroarch FBA core: complete freeze

this is a fresh clean install of retroarch, no older cfg file or folders.

under core options check if " diagnostics" its disabled,it must be or a lot of games fail

This other “FB Alpha RL” has 2 ways of loading the game, one directly with X, another pressing Select it says it will load through retroarch, if I select that it gives some error and puts me on a browse for roms dialog, then I select the ssf2 and it works; if I get to the menu from there it looks a lot like Retroarch’s, “Ingame Menu FB Alpha v0.2.97.28”, and some options like “Change libretro core”, “Return to FB Alpha RL”, “Quit RetroARch”.

This is pretty confusing now… -.- here’s some pics:

FB Alpha RL:

And Retroarch:

Images 6-8

^ frozen in the last one

Further checks:

Retroarch: fb_alpha.SELF = 5.341.888 bytes Retro FB: fb_alpha.SELF = 5.351.424 bytes

If I swap them around, both of the emus stop working, with a complete black screen and frozen ps3.

Yes it was disabled.

The problem is with your ROMs.

I can run that game just fine.

My guess is you’re probably missing a bunch of parent/child roms or whatever.

Well the rom on its own works with both the PC FBA and that other PS3 FB with a differnet core than retro’s, same rom file. How can it be the rom file then?

You tell me since I have this ROM running just fine here.

Then it must be some issue with retroarch and specific ps3 models? I have one of the fat ones made in Japan during the launch in 2006 with PS2 hardware, and running Rogero’s CFW 4.46

If you want me to do any tests or something let me know. I have done these tests isolating the rom completely, I made a new folder with just that one rom, and tested all 3 PC FBA, FB Retro, and RetroArch with the same file.

It has nothing to do with that - just with the ROM.

This is my MD5 checksum.

My MD5 is different, but that might be due to slightly different compression. Check the CRCs for every file:

edit: btw the other emu/core that works with these roms is this one: http://psx-scene.com/forums/content/fbanext-emulator-v1-0-0-ps3-released-467/ I see they mention you in the credits for contribution.

That version is ancient and pre-RetroArch. You can’t expect those old outdated ROMs to work anymore on current-day FBA.

Ok, but they do work with the most recent PC FBA. Were your CRCs different? or do you mean to say retroarch needs specific roms that work only with the PS3 retroarch and with nothing else? it just doesnt make much sense to me, same rom file works wtih:

  • older PS3 retro
  • current PC FBA
  • current PC MAME
  • current PS3 MAME

freezes PS3 upon loading:

  • current PS3 Retroarch

Also neither the older retroarch nor mame freeze the PS3 if they have any issue with the rom, so there’s something with this retroarch core causing the ps3 to freeze like that, whether the rom file is good or not (sega genesis roms do work with retroarch, so the most likely cause is just the fba core)

Have the current version of FBA on PC generate a dat file then learn to use clrmamepro. It is always useful to have complete sets and keep them together.

There is nothing wrong with the retroarch core - it just doesnt have error checking.

Can you check the CRC of the files inside that zip we compared earlier? see if they match mine. What else could I check? when the rom works with everything else… I can run a debug core or something if youd like me to test.

Seems you might of missed this. Doing this will make sure you have the correct roms for fba.

Thanks, but I did, the rom is correct and all the files and CRCs match my file

Hello all, Thank you for RetroArch for PS3, its an awesome emulator! I have a question: Does RetroArch support other controllers beside the PS3 controller? I can’t configure my custom controller buttons on player 2. Will the controller be compatible some day or can I do something myself to fix that?
