Is there any way to force an aspect ration in a resolution other than 640x480p? For whatever reason all resolutions except 640x448 and 512x448 cut off the top and bottom of the image and/or leave a ton of garbage on the screen. This is on an NTSC Wii U set to 16:9 aspect ratio and 480i with composite cables.
If youāre losing some of the picture to overscan, thatās down to your TV, not RetroArch. You might be able to find a function in your TVās settings called something like āDisplay Areaā to reduce the amount being cut off, but many TVs hide this in the service menu, which isnāt intended to be accessed by end-users. As for garbage, thatās hard to help with without some more detail.
As for custom scaling within the hardcoded resolutions, I feel like that kind of defeats the purpose of their design. The hardcoded resolutions are generally intended to be matched to the resolution of the emulated platform. e.g. Most SNES games look best on HDTVs at 512448 (exactly double the SNESās most common resolution, 256224). Similarly, NES games look best at 512480 (double 256240). Using a custom ratio with these resolutions would cause its own problemsāuneven lines, incorrect aspect ratio, etc.
Whatās stopping you just using 640480 with a custom ratio that corrects for your TVās overscan (with bilinear filtering on, most likely)? EDIT: As an example, my TV loses 16 pixels to overscan. If I feel like playing GBA games with them filling my screen, I use 640480 with a custom ratio of 522*464. This fills a 3:2 area on my widescreen TV, without any of the image lost of overscan. This is important on GBA as developers had no reasonable expectation of users having to deal with overscan.
That said, the vast majority of console games are developed with an awareness that players may not see the edges of the image output by the console, so itās very rare to find important information in these areas. HUD elements and such are generally positioned with awareness of the risk of being lost to overscan, so theyāre well inside the reasonable range. That is to say, overscan shouldnāt really be a concern for you most of the time. The exceptions, of course, are handhelds and arcade games.
Not much I can do with my āTVā since Iām playing on my Wii u tablet.I did get the custom aspect ratio option to work though and my max screen size is 640x458. Little bit annoying having to set a ratio with these constraints for each system but it works now.
Yea, im hoping they make it so that each core remembers the video settings last used.
Quick question:
With the Wii limited capabilities, can a future RA build run Mame and Mortal Kombat games? =D
Also, since when can retroarch run on the wii-u padā¦ wouldnt it need access to āwiiUā mode. Currently you can only run retroarch in vwii mode.(unless theres something im missing here)
Since Wii U System Update 4.0.0. In vWii, You still need a Wii Remote to use the Wii U gamepad and you canāt use the controller built into the gamepad.

Ah, I didnāt know that. Pretty cool stuff.
In the next build of retroarch wii would it be possible to implement an option to disable rgui. So that if a rom is loaded from command line i.e using homebrew channel xml parameters or from another loader like postloader or wiiflow pressing home button in a game returns you to the loader and not rgui? This would be especially useful when loading neogeo roms that normally require a restart anyway. I like the ui interface and can use it fine but all my emulators are setup how I like them and I do not want users to have the ability to change settings or control configs etc. I let my daughter use my wii so that happening is completely possible :0(
This could be AWESOME to make individual rom/emus channels with fowarders. Just click on a chanel anr RA is launched and the desired rom and config too.
You can already do this. Find a forwarder DOL that is able to parse command line parameters to the specific retroarch core. There are 1 or 2 around that come with the source code so you can set it to different target DOL files. Also You can set CLP in the meta.xml file so when launched from homebrew channel it runs specific commands. Wiiflow and postloader have plugins to select roms from a pretty GUI then launch via the emulator.
My issue is that I do not want to see RGUI at all (the menu that appears when you load retroarch without autostarting a game or when you press āHomeā from within a running game. I want to press āHomeā and exit out of retroarch completely or at least be prompted if I want to exit. If my coding skills were up to the task I would code it myself. The android version of retroarch has a very similar option in which you can totally disable RGUI.
Hi guys, any word on the new VBA core?
The next release will be before the end of the year.
Were there any snags that delayed its release? What else needs to be done before release out of curiosity?
I have noticed that the framerate on the stage select screen on Megaman 7 (SNES) is dropping to 45-50fps. Could anyone confirm this problem?
Thanks for reply, good to know itās coming. Even its current state itās impressive. Iām really excited for an upgrade, canāt wait. Thanks for your efforts guys.
Iām not part of the dev team, I just read that somewhere on the forum. No idea what the next release will include for Wii.
Oh, my apologies. Congrats to all the awesome developers of retroarch, your hardwork is really appreciated, I hope they will continue to support wii. Best wishes.
Aww man, I was looking like crazy for an update in the downloads section since last time I visited the blog was said a new release was coming, but anyway if lateness is due devs wish next release to be a huge update, IĀ“m happy. In the other hand I have a little question:since we are already running .exe on our consoles (Cave Story), and it runs flawlessly even on gamecube, in fact it is the game that I play more until issues with the other cores are solved, is there a chance that the dosbox core that you are working on runs on a level 0 console like the gamecube? I actually run .exes on my nds and even more homebrew than in gamecube, but also there are some gamecube emulators that are better on gamecube that their counterparts in nds (like the PC Engine ones) and based in these facts I still believe that a dosbox emulator is possibe on gamecube, but only experts have the last word. See you and keep the good work guys.
Iām mostly playing with my SNES Controller on my Wii, I donāt really like pressing Home on my WiiMote to go back to the Menuā¦I would like to be Mapped to the Z + Start
So I donāt have a reason to waste my batteries on my WiiMote
Alsoon VBA, Game Gear and Game Boy Emuās
Add a feature that allows you to crop the screen
I donāt really playing GB or GBA Games full screen
