Yeah, that sounds odd but when you used to it, it’s somewhat comfortable, at least for me. I’m using only for the games requires 4-5 buttons, Snes and some Gba games especially. (Don’t like GC controller) Never use it for Nes games, though. And any game requires no more than 2-3 buttons for that matter.
I’d highly recommend the Classic Controller, it’s great for all cores in my opinion, a really nice pad.
This, a million times this; I can’t stress how great the Classic Controller is.
I first got a Classic Controller Pro, and while it’s great for some games, SNES + Classic Controller is the way to go. Not being able to find the original model of Classic Controller, I got a chinese one from eBay that plugs to the NGC controller port! So you get a comfy controller for SNES and for the GameCube.
It’s cheap to boot, if you’re willing to spend 14 bucks. =)
I use the classic controller pro for all Retro Arch cores. For me, it is the best pad available!
T’sup Charco, hope the new years treating you well. So far so good for me except I caught a cold… I’m not whimping out though and I’m still working even though it sux da ballz XD
This^ 1000x, I know you already said why but please people if possible just stay away from the nunchuk for retro gaming lol.
This^ 10,000x lol. If you can find one I recommend first generation classic controller, not the pro.

Yeah I have two of them, great for when my buddy calls over for a beer and a few games
Might have to give Sengoku 3 a spin next time!

Happy new year guys!! I was browsing on gbatemp forum firewar and decided this is the correct place to post my findings on RA Gamecube. I downloaded it about 20 minutes after aviable in the downloads section but could not test/reply about it until now. Here my findings:
-PCE Fast core: Bravo, you did it! The controller issue is fixed, so now we can play super cd games with sound and without battling with the controller on our gamecubes and when you add a psx adapter for gamecube is like playing with the famous Classic Controller for its old bro, the Wii. My respect for that.
-Snes core:Same as last release, games like Chrono Trigger and Kirby Dream Land 3 do not load.
-VBA next core:Same as last release, neither gbc nor gba games load.
-NX Engine:Sameas last release, it works well.
-FBA, Neo Geo, CPS1 and CPS2 cores: Not tested yet since those cores are broken on Wii.
-Prboom and tyrquake cores: I cannot make them to work but I feel prboom has some chances to work since in 0.9.9 it inmediately gave me a code dump screen when trying to launch it, while in this version it keeps loading for indefinity time. Would appreciate if someone share his folder structure and files needed to make work these cores.
I have not tested yet the other ones because I doubt they have serious issues because they worked well in the previous version. Not too much progress for us in this new version, but I have faith that step by step they could be solved in the near future. Ah, another important thing: how can I show up the in game menu? Remember that in gamecube in order to save the game we needed to exit retroarch through the menu to save the changes. Again thanks for your hard work, and now let me kick some skeleton buts in Castlevania ROB .
Dat flamewar at gbatemp is unnecesary. Them guys that began the war are just trolls and shouldn’t be listened.
Anyway, VBANEXT I beg to disagree, there’s a noticeable speed boost with many games.
Boktai, for instance is now playable, whilst Boktai 2 is still a bit laggy but not as much…
… Sadly, Shinbok (aka Boktai 3) is still unplayable.
Metroid Zero Mission seems to be quite the improvement. I use WiiMednafen for that game since it somehow runs it better, but RetroArch Wii is goood.
Haven’t tried A Link to the Past GBA yet…
Personally, I prefer the Classic Controller Pro. The original is a bit too small for my hands, and I think overall it is more ergonomic without sacrificing that “Nintendo” feel.
aea, I think I saw it mentioned before but I don’t think those games will ever play. The Gamecube just doesn’t have enough Ram.
Agreed.
I had the same problem. I fixed it by loading Wiixplorerer and loading one of the separete cores. After that I closed RA so it will boot the previous core next time I start RA.
No more black screen.
Also +1 on the Classic Pro controller. I have 4 of them ! 2 first gens (analog shoulder buttons, and 2 Pro controllers) I have big hands so the Pro fits my hands very well, as for my wife and kids, they prefer the original classic controller.
That worked! Didn’t know you could boot .dol files through WiiXplorer, thanks Hielkenator.
I didn’t realise that either, handy tip
Yes, Wiimote+nunchuk is so lame when compared to classic controller. And When it comes to the retro gaming, I think same could be said about HDTVs. Yet a lot of people use them. But that’s beside the point, one of the reasons why we love emulators so much, favor over services like virtual console is that they give us freedom, don’t force us to use specific accessories/equipment in the first place.
Hej!
I hate sooo much the fancy '“move-the-heck-of-your-body” games that were born in the Wii generation.
Zelda Twilight Princes was AWESOME on GameCube. It was horrible on Wii, having to mimic movements with the controllers all the time. Resident Evil, the same!
The same for the Super Donkey Kong on Wii! I even used a cheat to remove the shaking-wiimote-feature and replace the fuction with a standard button, just like SNES.
I don’t like the fact about needing to shake the hell out of me instead of pressing a single button for the same result.
Eeeks!!!
I hope you don’t mean RE4, as the Wii version is the definitive version of the game.
This is just over exaration. INo good wii game involves the amount of movement you are saying. Most games involve a little wiggling of the nunchuck or Wiimote, sheesh.
RE4 ? lol only pointing and aoiding in scripted sequences. It;s the best and definitive version. There’s no “super donkey kong” I think you mean Donkey Kong Country returns. Apart from the minor wiggling you have to do, one of the best games of this generation.
If you mean just Dance, well then you would have had a point.
Someone else has been experienced black screen upon start? When I deleted my previous retroarch.cfg version (and retroarch folder) it did boot just fine, but now if I make a change in the configurations and save it, it again give me black screen…

Sorry but it seems we are tunning different channels: you are talking about Wii version that I already know works, but I talk about GC version wich I would like to experiment and enjoy its benefits.
